In our daily walk of life, we always hear this phrase - I Hear You especially from the politician or government official whenever we bring our issues to them.

Does this sound familiar?

Every and then, we hear people say I Hear You, and then nothing happens.

If we go and meet our people's representative or community leader and highlight the plight we are facing and hoping he can do something about it, all we get is - I Hear You!!!.

Then after a few weeks, we wait for their action and nothing happen and again we go and see them, once again we hear the familiar reply - I Hear You.

Now, the main issue is why do people especially those in power like to use the phrase - I Hear You?

Is it some sort of the catch words for them to make people happy or they think by saying so, it shows how much they care about your problems which they are supposed to help to solve?

So what is the different between I hear you and listen? is there any different between hear and listen?

I once told one government official that they only heard but they never listened and he was stunned as suddenly it dawns on him that there was a huge different between the two words.

It appears that most people said I hear you just to get rid of you since they may find your persistent complaint a pain and annoying which is not handle properly may cost them their yearly performance bonus and affect their performance appraisal by their superior.

I would have thought we should always try to view any issue from the other side.

Someone once said a great successful person is so successful because he listens more than he hears.

When we listen, we listen with our heart and soul and pay more attention to the points discussed whereas when we hear, it is only sound and do not really pay attention to the content of the discussion.

So in the future, is you go to any government department or talk to any leaders and who give you the reply -- I Hear You, you know he is not interested in you or on what you are telling him.

Likewise, I used to come across some superiors who always said I Hear You when you were briefing him on the work you have done or highlighting things or where improvement need to be made in the operation, you know, you are just wasting your time as your suggestion and recommendations will not be seriously taken care of.

Well, this is the world we are living in and have to accept this politically correct statement is you are to survive in corporate world and climb the corporate ladder to advance your career.

Sometimes words can be empty and you can see the situation in what occurs, Alan.

Maybe the important thing is if the problem is being solved when either an ear listened or heard it.

Good post

I have only ever had one person say 'I hear you', and they repeated it, but were clearly not 'hearing me lol
