Fighting a Tree

This past week was all but enjoyable. I'm thankful I made it through though. My fiance and I went four-wheeling in the mountains. It started out perfectly, a nice hot day, with a slight cooling breeze as we rode our ATV through the trails. We saw all kinds of wildlife. Not only deer, rabbits, turtles, chipmunks, frogs, and a coyote, but also huge bear tracks. I just knew we would be chased by a bear. But thankfully, we never saw a bear.

It started to get a little darker and as we were going downhill on a trail, it became dark before we finished the trail. Everything was fine at first. But then, the lights started flickering and the ATV started acting weird. It was like it was losing power, so we thought maybe it was overheating. But we didn't want to be stuck in the mountain in the dark (even though we had our guns). We didn't want to risk it. So we put the ATV in neutral and just drifted downhill hoping it would cool it off if it was overheated. But as we headed down the hill, I saw a branch with white flowers close ahead on the left. I think the only reason I saw it was because of the white. The lights were still flickering. I closed my eyes. I tried to duck. but I was too late. That Branch, with huge thorns about half an inch long, slapped me and grabbed the right side of my face. Blood started gushing everywhere. I pulled the thorn out of my eyelid and more blood gushed out.

We stopped the ATV. The power was already off. My fiance said It looked like he could see my eyebrow bone through that cut. We were scared! So I used a shirt to hold pressure on it. Our plan was to get to the car and go to the hospital. Nope. The ATV wasn't gonna let that happen. It wouldn't start. But luckily someone was coming down the same trail. I was thankful to know that those two people were related to my fiance. We didn't know they were there until then. They towed us back to where our car was and we took off to the hospital.

At the hospital, They did blood work to make sure I didn't have anything in my system (which I didn't). They also did a CT scan. By the time I got to the hospital the cut started to seal itself so I didn't need stitches. But the scan revealed my cheekbone had a fracture near the sinuses. They were worried that my sinuses could have been perforated. So, they sent us two hours away to another hospital where there was a specialist for that kind of stuff. Thankfully I didn't need surgery for any perforations. But now because of the narcotics and tetanus shot they injected me with, I am loopy. After what felt like 100 hours at the hospital we finally get to go home.

Later in the week, I am no longer in pain. But it was a toss-up of either my arm or my face hurting worse. I figured out it was my arm that hurt worse. That tetanus shot went from my tricep to my bicep and through my pectorals. I could hardly move. I never want to go through any of that again. But if I can walk away from all that with newfound wisdom, it would be... Never try to pick a fight with a tree. You'll lose. ;-)

I am hoping to get back in gear with writing this week. This past week was a crazy week.

Sorry about your bad experience, Celina! I'm glad those "angels" rescued you and your Fiance, and that you are healing up! This is one of life's experiences that we can all draw something from!

Keep healing up, my friend!

Jeff

Thank you. The next day when it was finally day light, we checked the radiator in the ATV. It was bone dry. Lol. From now on we will not only take gas with us but a gallon of water too.

Yes, that will always help. Lesson learned, but I hope you are feeling much better now!

Yes I am feeling a lot better. The bruise on my face is gone. It's still a little tender, but I'm sure that'll go away soon as well.

I'm very glad to hear that, Celina! It could have been so much worse!

Yes. Thankfully it wasn't.

I second that, Celina!
