TYPES OF PROCRASTINATORS

WE ALL procrastinate on some tasks and goals!

Donโ€™t beat yourself up about not doing certain tasks. You are not alone because we all do it in some form. The degree of procrastination just differs. A common reason for procrastinating is poor planning skills and USUALLY NOT laziness. I use the word โ€œUSUALLYโ€, but in most cases, it is not.

Everybody has different reasons for procrastinating which are all triggered by underlying root problems. Based on this, there are generally 5 different types of procrastinators.

See if you can identify your type in my posts over the next few weeks. Once they are defined, I will proffer some solutions for each type that will require a genuine willingness to change. It;s not easy but it can definitely be done, especially as this will affect your success at WA.

1. The Wishful Thinker / Dreamer Procrastinator

This type of procrastinator sets lofty goals without any thought if they are realistic or can be measured. They love to dream big, and there is nothing wrong with that BUT

Do you?

  • Set goals that are not clear or measurable? Because there is no way to hold yourself accountable, you keep postponing your work and of course, if there is no way to measure the goal, you really cannot say you failed. Right?
  • Not set clear action plans to achieve your goals
  • Never seem to have enough time to work on your goals because of distractions

If you answered โ€œYesโ€ to any of these, then you are a WISHFUL THINKER PROCRASTINATOR

Procrastination is one of my biggest challenges! Even when I am doing something that I enjoy, like working within WA. I am a dreamer, but nothing beyond reason.

It is good to set reachable goals, but they must also present a challenge. Either way, 'too easy' or 'too hard' takes away any serious interest.

Hi Canty,
It's good that you are already self-aware that you are a Dreamer procrastinator. That's a whole lot better than many!

I agree with you about goal setting. If you use the "SMART" technique, you can con consistently set realistic goals that are neither too easy or too hard.

Thanks for the read!

Hello Elizabeth,
It's healthy to procrstinate a bit here and there. It's when it begins to affect your productivity and the quality of work you produce that you have a problem. :-)
Ceci

I do procrastinate sometimes but I do not see myself as a wishful procrastinator
Looking forward to the other types

Not a wishful procrastinator, but I do fall into webs of procrastination sometimes.
And lose valuable time.
Thanks for the post.

Very true, indeed, but I also like the quote attributed to Aaron Burr, a variation of it to Mark,Twain, and a few others:

"Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow"

Even though it is used in jest many times, there is some background to it suggesting that one might have more time to think it over before doing it, and not fail because it was a spur of the moment decision!

Excellent post though, Cecelia! More people likely follow your school of thought, as I have on many occasions too!

Guess what? I agree with you Jeffrey!! That quote is accurate if you view it in the context of scheduling and prioritizing your daily task......and that is not procrastination.

To operate outside the realm of procrastination, schedule your tasks appropriately - if you need more time. There's nothing wrong with that as long as you re not pushing them out because they seem to be hard and you are trying to avoid doing them until the very last minute :-) Now, that's procrastination :-)
