Being Successful

In May of this year, I really hit bottom in my confidence level. You know it's just one of those times that reality just comes around and hits you in the face without you expecting it. I'd felt down for some time, but never could figure out why. Then came the 2x4 and it finally hit me: I'm not successful.

Don't get me wrong, I had actually been very successful in a lot of things. Many millennials my age can't brag that the only debt they have is the house. Many are sunk deep into debt and could not even think about owning a house by the time their 31. My wife and I have had to do without a few things, but somehow we've managed to get rid of all of our debt except the house. I'm not sure which baby step that leaves us on in the Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University, but I've felt like it was a big accomplishment.

Then we had our first kid: our son Micah!

My wife is such a strong person that we decided to have him naturally. Seeing those first ultrasounds of him at 7 weeks: such a little guy just resting there. But then, he looked right at the ultrasound! I don't understand how anyone would purposely abort a child. God is amazing at how he has created all of us. Micah is doing well and had his first birthday in August. And he is turning out to be a very smart kid! Dad and mom are working nonstop just to stay ahead of him.

Yet, despite all these things I still felt unsuccessful. I had earned a BA in Biology from an engineering school. I felt like I was capable of more than just my line factory job that didn't pay well. I was getting paid a little more than some others because of my education and experience, but I don't really know how those other guys do it. I simply wasn't doing what I wanted to do either. So much negativity and no desire for innovation. So I did what everyone else would do if they didn't know how to solve a problem.

I Googled it.

In May of 2017, I did a simple Google search on how to make money online. I found one that was attractive, but did a search of it and added the word "scam," because it sounded like a scam. That was when I was introduced to Wealthy Affiliate. I've been a premium member for about three months now and have a full fledged website up and running! While I haven't made much in revenue, I am excited about the future. Having a website about my hobbies also helped me to get back into my hobbies more. My wife has said that she has seen a light in my eyes she hasn't seen in a long time.

I think it is the light at the end of the tunnel. I'm working to get there. I want out of this tunnel of negativity and feeling unsuccessful. I want to do something more with my life. I have so many other things to offer, I fear that if I don't use my natural talents, I may lose them to others less desirable. It all comes down to a choice.

I choose to press on.

Every hour... day... week... month... year...

Whatever it takes to make this thing work. I want my fun stuff to pay enough to replace my day to day job. Persistence is the key as my coach said recently.

Perhaps then, success is really not something that is attained, but is an attitude to always do your best when you can and find satisfaction in that. To look back over the milestones in your life... and smile as you look forward to the summits you have left to climb.

I can do it.

And so can you.
