The World Wide Web: Why Control Should Not Be An Option.
I think people underestimate the value of letting the internet run wild. The internet is the cause of a huge revolution of sorts on a global scale. It has challenged our ability to interpret what we read. For the first time in history people are reading into what is printed on the pages of books, magazines and web results. The newspapers and governments all over the world realize the risk of poor reporting because any third party anywhere in the world with a computer can challenge a false report and create a nightmare for the news agency or bureaucracy at fault.
Contributors Are Scary.
Everyone from al Qaeda down to the mother's march for decency has a website promoting their values and beliefs. Our children are exposed to atrocities that I as a child only imagined happened in hell. Every type of information is readily available from brutal sex to Christian dating services. The good and bad suddenly become equal in stature and of course the natural reaction of society as a whole is to quell the things that should not be which is why you still have trouble buying Mark Twain's books.
We're A Curious Lot.
What we want and what we want are not always the same. I believe the rampant nature of the world wide web is shaping a world that will grasp the value of decency as a whole simply because mistruths and and altered information are becoming transparent through the unrestricted availability of information. I don't think it is necessary to burn books or witches just because I don't understand them and they challenge my fragile beliefs. The internet is home to every odd, screwball organization imaginable. They all pitch their twist and I wonder if any one even reads it but someone does. Someone is converted or more likely reinforced that what they already believe is true.
The Constitution. Early Internet?
The constitution of the United States government guaranteed a lot freedoms. Why? Because the group that put that document together were representing the views of a population that demanded freedom from the strictures of nearly every government in the world and their common cause was the desire to whatever they damned well please. It was a simple document that promised to serve the people and that the people would always control the government and that they would represent each other equally. So in the name of decency, monetary gain and special interests that represent the perceived greater good, that document has been reshaped to meet the needs of the few. Some of the people are pleased. A lot of others though are not. Sorry I went a bit farther with that than I intended.
The internet can be controlled if you allow it and just like everything in history that had the ability to serve the people (all) it will become a tool for collecting tax, benefiting business, special interest groups and keeping the teeming masses from knowing to much. There are a lot of things I don't like about the internet, but there are a lot of things in the world I just don't like. Pulling blinders over my eyes will not make them go away. Allowing some one to censure one aspect of the information being presented on the web denies someone their right no matter how distorted and messed up it is. I've been reading a lot about how people would like the internet to be... LEAVE IT THE HELL ALONE. LEAVE THE CONSTITUTION ALONE -SCREW CENSERSHIP AND MIND CONTROL WHERE EVER IT IS FOUND!!
