Google Analytics just sent a message today about Data retention and an Action Required for you.

The Google Analytics Data Retention controls give you the ability to set the amount of time before user-level and event-level data stored by Google Analytics is automatically deleted from Analytics’ servers.

These settings will take effect until May 25, 2018

You can choose how long Analytics retains data before automatically deleting it:

  1. 14 months
  2. 28 months
  3. 38 months
  4. 50 months
  5. Do not automatically expire

When data reaches the end of the retention period, it is deleted automatically on a monthly basis. Visit your Analytics Google Account for more information about this.

Set the options

You need to have Edit permission for the property to set these options.

  1. Sign in to Google Analytics..
  2. Click Admin, and navigate to the property you want to edit.
  3. In the PROPERTY column, click Tracking Info > Data Retention.
  4. User-data retention: select the retention period you want.
  5. Reset on new activity: turn the switch on or off.

Excellent. I have a question in relation to this.

How long should the Google Analytics Data Retention period be?

Hi David, Sorry for the late reply. I work 2nd shift till midnight and I only got the chance to totally open my account on the desktop. David, I believed it will be for permanent. It is a requirement of General Data Protection Program (GDPR), the new data protection law coming into force on May 25, 2018. You have the option to " Do Not Automatically Expire ."

Hi Bien, thanks for coming back to me. Another WA member suggested to me that it's something not to worry about, so I am putting it on the 'long finger' for the moment and waiting for more information. I am sure that there will be a lot of conflicting information coming out in the next few weeks.

On a much lighter note, I read this blog by Bo earlier today and then read your response. I thought that you might be amused:

I read the blog. Wow! That made me laugh. Thanks

Bien

Yeah I received the email message from google analytics yesterday about this. I hope this will help other members to pay attention to this changes. Thanks a lot.

Interestingly enough, I was going through my email and I received the notification in my promotions email folder late yesterday.

Thanks again, Bien!

Thank you for sharing this.
Is there any reason given why they need to do that?

It is about the requirement of General Data Protection Program (GDPR), the new data protection law coming into force on May 25, 2018. I hope this will help to inform the members of WA. Thanks a lot

All the best.
