How To Choose A Domian Name That Gets Buyers Attention
It is important that you understand how to choose a domain name that is right for your business. One that is easy to remember, and is relevant to your business.
The shorter the better, I always say. Your domain name is the initial image people will have of your business. Take some time to brainstorm short, succinct names, 2-3 words that will identify your business or brand. Don't discount anything at this point.
If your business is making blue widgets and your company name is Blue Widget World, and you are targeting blue widgets as your main keyword, you could come up with names like:
Blue Widget World
Blue Widget Manufacturers
BWW
Widgets for the World
World of Blue Widgets
Widgetco
You get the idea!
You can also think of a domain name that is brandable. Domain names of websites like Zinga, Twiter, Reddit and Facebook say nothing about what their business is, but they are very memorable and brandable.
You might consider using an acronym, your last name, or a specific product within your business for a brandable domain name.
Benefits of brandable domain names:
- Less spammy sound (Domains usine 4 or 5 words are hard to remember and a bit over the top)
- Typically the URL will be shorter
- A .com ay be more available if you have a unique name
- A catchy domain can go a long way help you establish authority. This is very relevant for you if you choose to go farther with your website
- Less likely to over-optimize your site without stuffing keywords in the domain
So get creative! The sky is the limit!
A word about Exact Match Domains
An exact match domain (EDM) is a website domain that is exactly what your website is about. This is more an SEO tactic that Google isn’t giving much of a preference to any longer.
Example of an EDM:
Keyword researched for the main point of the site is Three Finger Guitar Chords
EDM: ThreeFingerGuitarChords.com
There was a time when EDM's had a greater weight in search ranking. Recently Google throttled down the algorithm to equal out domain name rankings. Having an EDM will not hurt your rankings, but will not help like they did in the past.
I would not spend a lot of time trying to get an exact match domain. If you search for a minute or two and it is available you may want to buy it. Your choice.
Here is a word about the relevancy of exact match domains (EDM's) from Matt Cutts of Google. This is from 2012. So you can be sure that Google has implemented a fair amount of changes concerning EDM'S.

In the end, it is not the domain name that will get you ranked. It is about the content and your ability to come across as an authority in your given niche that will be the difference.
So have fun with your domain brainstorm and come up with a domain name that is memorable!

Very interesting! Things changed indeed. At least the new Google rules give more freedom. Thanks for the info.
I'm having trouble coming up with a domain name for promoting the WA program. My niche is stay at home moms. Not sure if I should do a general site for stay at home moms or something else. I'd appreciate any advice!! Thank you
I just did a quick search for you as I was also trying to come up with a new domain name too. I found that this is available: workathome4moms (.com) - Sounds pretty good to me, quite catchy and not too long. That domain could be as general or specific as you want. If you like it grab it quickly as I'm sure someone will have a use for it!
I recently started and chose a domain name that was too generalized and narrowed down my niche as I progressed into this venture and realized my domain name is not what my website title name is and thought this would be a problem. But in fact, after reading this post, I think it will be better than expected. Thank you for clarifying this and now I can move on.
You should choose a domain name based on your Niche. Google looks for the domain name to match the niche. The more it matches the higher your rank will be in the search engines. For example, If your niche is "How to train your puppy" I would choose "HowToTrainYourPuppyIn30Days" because more than likely that domain name would already be taken by someone else.
Hey Steve:
I believe a domain to mach your niche is better identifiable to a customer, but Matt Cutts was stating and what I have been reading lately, that preference for ranking with an exact match or close to a match (my perception) has been reduced to give a more level playing field to non EDm domains. This stuff changes so fast it is difficult to keep up with. : )
I think just writing with good authority content is the best bet regardless f the domain name
