MIA & BSOS Alert !!!
4
I was just sitting here this morning over my 3rd (or is it 4th) cup of coffee, planning my day. It suddenly dawned on me, that other than responding to a couple of Kyle's posts, I've been conspicuously absent from the community over the last few weeks.
In fact, it's been over 5 weeks since my last Blog post on reconstruction. Not that it was my plan to be absent for that long, but life seems to have gotten in the way.
So in case you're interested (somewhat self-deprecating humor), I am back and active again. Things have just been crazy and busy over the last several weeks. The good news is, there is light at the end of the tunnel.
I also came to another realization this morning. Another "Ah Ha" moment if you will. You know how I love this concept. In fact, the moment was so powerful, I thought I would write a real quick post. Almost a "public service announcement" if you will.
Without even realizing it, I have become afflicted with what has become known as "Bright Shiny Object Syndrome" (BSOS). A phrase seems to have become quite popular lately. In fact, there have been a number of blogs posted on the topic here on WA. If you want to learn more about this deadly affliction, here are a couple of posts by other community members, that I particularly like:
ThomasPaul's:

Chieftess:

I don't really want to get into why being "under the spell" of this seemingly benign affliction is bad. The above posts should cover it pretty well. If you want to learn more, there are tons of excellent blogs published. What I really wanted to point out is how, even for those of us who are watching for it and should really know better, it can still be a problem.
Here I am, in the final stages of putting together this wonderful, systematic program for newcomers. I'm detailing everything that folks who are new to this industry should be doing. What happens, as I'm doing the writing, researching the content, to double check that what I'm saying is accurate and bang... I get sucked in...
Suckered by a slick, scammy video that pulled me in. No sooner did I waste almost 15 minutes watching this artful piece of slick marketing, but I also made it worse, by entering my email in the flashing opt-in box.
I knew better. What I was watching didn't compliment the new program I want to bring to market, nor in fact did it truly have anything to do with my "reconstructed business". But there you have it. The BSOS affliction I thought I had under control came back to bite me.
So where did I fail? Was it a lack of discipline? Maybe.
Was it a lack of commitment? No, I don’t think so. I’ve set a deadline to get everything published and the website ready to go for April 1st. The timing is somewhat ironic, that I’ve decided to flip maintenance mode on the blog off at 4:00 AM on April fool’s Day.
Personally, I think it was a matter of choice. I chose to stop what I was doing and watch that video. I chose to enter my email address and now I guess I will have to deal with the consequences.
The good news is that the potential downside to that choice were relatively small in the greater scheme of things. I can hopefully just unsubscribe, should I choose to. Unfortunately, not all of our other choices related to BSOS are as easy to fix.
The biggest thing to remember in this business is to stay focused. To continue to constantly test to make sure you are on the right path.
Remember to apply what I love to refer to as the “smell test” every time you read a piece of marketing or watch a video. I believe in my heart-of-hearts, that every one of us has the ability to listen to that inner voice that says “something about this smells fishy”. It has been my personal experience, as with many others in this community, that if it sounds too good to be true… it is !!!
If you get a moment today, take some time and read the posts I’ve mentioned above. Do a bit of research and read more about how, you too can recognize and prevent BSOS.
Falling prey to this pernicious disease is what keeps most of us unfocused and frankly poorer for it.
Have a great day and remember to "plan you work and then work your plan"...

Learn from your experience. Look at this video again. What was it that was promised that hit your buttons. How can you turn this to your advantage? How does it fit with your current promotion?
You may not yet be the worlds greatest marketer but this promotion got the desired result somehow. Turn a mistake into an asset.
Thanks for the comment Craig... You are absolutely correct... It's critical that we always learn from our mistakes... You know, I think what caught my attention is that I'm having some support issues with one of the programs I'm involved with and this was a competitor... So what got me, was just the place I'm in right now, especially given the critical nature of the timing of what I'm doing...
That's the funny point of my ah ha moment... no matter how prepared we think we are, there's always something out there that can grab us. Often at the most inopportune times...
Thanks for the comment and reading the post
