"Like a kidney stone"

Hello everyone,

you might wonder what I mean by the title. Well, it is a line from the lyrics of the song titled "Momma Sed" by Puscifer. The song was featured in the movie "End Of Watch" so it might be familiar to many of you.

Basically what it is about is that sometimes in life, you just have to roll with the punches and that's how you deal with things. "Changes come, take it like a man [...] Like a kidney stone, this too shall pass".

Yet again I haven't been active here in the last couple of days and yet again it was because of struggling with my personal issues. But what I would like to talk about now instead of boring you with details is what I learnt in my past few years, how to cope with difficulties when seemingly nothing helps.

I, like many of us, always looked for a solution instantly every time I found myself in a difficult situation. And that worked most of the time, and that's just fine. You know the drill - you Google stuff up when you get stuck in your work at the office, you ring that vet up your friend had mentioned to you, you bring your car to that mechanic your colleague had just recommended the other day, etc. We like instant solutions.

But what if you are feeling down for no apparent reason? What if you are just feel burnt out, exhausted, depressed, unmotivated? Usually there's no help in these kind of situations, well at least not the instant help that we are all so accustomed to in this fast paced digital age of ours. When you have a day like that, it seems that whatever you try, nothing helps. You are just feeling down and that is that.

Well, here's the thing: when you have one of those days, don't try to desperately look for a solution. Chances are, even if you find some advice in some online forum, it won't work for you because there's just simply no such thing as a one-size-fits-all recipe on how to cheer up when the mood is low.

The answer is so simple that most of us don't seem to realise it: just wait it out. Just give it time, just let go for a bit. That's it.

I know it could sound disappointing to not have a fast and easy way out, but that's my experience. Sometimes you just have to let things to sort themselves out and you just have to sit through it. Just grab a cup of tea and relax, or watch a movie or a series you like, or sit in your favourite chair and read a detective novel or go outside and give the dog a good, long walk. And try to be in the moment, try to focus on that warm cuppa, on the twist in the plot of the detective story, or how cool is that even a little walk around the neighbourhood can feel such a fantastic adventure to your dog.

Your only job is to try and not to think about your mood. The key is to be in the moment for a while and go with the flow. Trust me - it works. It worked for me in the past, it worked for the last couple of days (thank you, PG tips and Agatha Christie!) and it will work for you.

As soon as you are in the present, focusing on the simple (but at the end of the day, so important) things that are happening to you in the now, the process of getting out of that mental hole starts automatically. Little do you know and after a while you find yourself somehow just feeling better and better. One of the absolute wonders of the human mind, if you ask me.

So good luck to any of you having one of those days and remember: "like a kidney stone / this too shall pass". It really will.

Cheers,

Richie

As a literature teacher I would say, with old Milton "they also serve who sit and pray"..., where praying can also be waiting

I like that one. Thanks!

Thanks Richie
Brenda

You're welcome, Brenda :)

LoL - like the analogy. I will remember this one. Thanks for sharing Richie. :) Beverley

Glad you liked it :)

Yes, these days do pass ;) I like the analogy.

Thanks, Kary :)

We can only change the future by what we do today Richie.... :) Take care!

Indeed, Terri, Indeed :) Cheers!

Back atcha!!! :)

Hi Ritchie. Your phrase is very apt. Here's another one . "You can't do anything about the past. Last Year - last Month - last Week, - Yesterday or even 5 minutes ago"
Maybe before your time but Edif Piaff said it all "Je ne regret rein".
So the future is everything
Cheers, Mike

Exactly, Mike. Thank you!

Good stuff Richie, what ever works for you. Myself, I surround myself with positive people so if a get down I give one of them a call or meet someone for a coffee. If ever you feel down you could try that here in the community.
Bill

Great idea, Bill, I'm sure others will find it helpful too :)

Thanks Richie. It is so true, this too shall pass.

You're welcome, Amanda :)

Hi Richie, that statement "this too shall pass" was voted the most profound truth by some group of academics in the not very distant past. I don't have the details, but I think they said that it was the one sentence that could not be argued about in terms of its veracity.

And I do agree with them wholeheartedly. Thanks, Con :)

It took me about 45 years to figure this one out but it's so true.

At least you finally managed to figure it out, Paul :) Many of us can't say the same about ourselves.

Cheers,
Richie
