Money Mindset
While growing up in a Christian household in the Caribbean island of Jamaica, It was distinctly impressed upon my mind that money was not a good thing. That it was not to be sought or pursued. Now I am trying to acknowledge and change that mindset as it is making it hard for me to enjoy the freedom that comes with having wealth.
Only now after more than half a century of living a honest, hardworking lifestyle, am I realising that I need financial education and money management skills. I work in healthcare as a nurse and midwife and yet I have debt.
So I have turned to the Holy Bible for some answers. And have written my comments on what I learned in each verse, in brackets.
In the book of Proverbs 13:11 ESV, "Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it." (So the Bible warns against get-rich-quick approach).
Proverbs 22:7 ESV The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender. (The wealth does bring some amount of freedom and debt (some kinds) leads to loss of freedom).
Luke 12:15 ESV And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” (Wealth is important but people are more important than money).
1 Timothy 6:17-19 ESV As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life. (Similar lessons as above).
These are important concepts for putting wealth acquisition and money mindset into context.
