Spambots and how to block them
I had a particular spammer that kept registering as a user on my site. I finally added a plugin, IP Blacklist.
When I logged in today, I saw 11 attempted hacks. They show up in red in the sidebar of admin. When I checked the IP address in google, they all came up as spam bots. The list give you the option to just click on Block IP, and it blacklists them for you.
Until today, I never new this was happening. The users I knew about, but not the bots.
I recommend this highly.

I'd recommend installing GASP http://wordpress.org/plugins/growmap-anti-spambot-plugin/ rather than trying to blacklist a range of IP addresses. GASP adds a checkbox next to the submit button which only a human can tick so stopping robot spam, then Akismet https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/protect-your-site-from-spam-use-akismet will deal with the human spammers afterwards. :) Rich.
I already use GASP. It did not stop the people this nor individual spammers from registering.
I had a similar problem on one of my sites. Everyday, I would have to go into my admin posts section and delete users and their associated posts by up to the hundreds. Luckily, they never made it to the published site as I had mew posts set to be 'uncategorized' and I had to approve them. Nothing on the site itself referred to any 'uncategorized' post so they never showed up. I desperately sought some sort of protection. Ended up finding 'All In One WP Security'. It approaches all aspects of site security from limiting # of login attempts for brute force security, and you can set how long before another attempt can be made, simple math captchas for admin login with redirect, many more. Set once and forget. It surely saved me.
These attacks can be relentless and I thoroughly understand your frustration. Very happy for you that you found something strong enough to allow you to stay in control.
The one person that kept signing up as a user )that I repeatedly deleted) was frustrating. I could not find his IP address. I am hoping this is going to block him as well.
I have had a lot of traffic in Japanese leaving comments, and and attempted hack also. We need to stay current on what helps protect us.
