Diy she shed
We have been building a DIY She Shed in our backyard. I have learned that being a work from home mom can be really difficult! We chose to work from home so we can be here for our children, care for our homes and earn an income. Separating time for all of these things can be very difficult, especially if you do not have a dedicated work space for your business.
Why Work Space Location Matters
As a mom of three, I find it difficult to concentrate on my business while I am sitting inside my own home. I sit down to work with a coffee next to me and have great intentions of working until I have completed my daily tasks.
However, I always look up and see some sort of chore that hasn't been done, so I put down my laptop, run off to clean or complete a chore. The problem is I find that when I start one chore, I immediatley notice another chore that ought to be done, by the time I return to my laptop an hour or more has gone by.
Effectively wiping out my much-needed time to focus on my business.
Distractions Everywhere
Often times company will stop by, and see that I am not up too much (in their eyes) and hang around for a visit. My children are the biggest culprits for not seeing that I am busy, generally they barrage me with 100's of questions or requests.
The pets can be a distraction, my dogs are super cute and they are always doing something adorable that I just can't ignore!
Photography opportunities arise within my home as the light of the day dances across my windows, casting interesting shadows or rainbows on my walls and objects around the home.
As you can tell, I get easily distracted! I am one of those people!
By the end of the day I find myself as the last person still awake, usually because I have put of my daily tasks for my business all day. The silence of the home is a great opportunity for me to sit down and FINALLY get my work done.
Inspiration
Something had to change, either I rent out an office space (which defeats the purpose of working from home), or we find an alternative solution.
When I am not working with WA, I am crafting and selling my products online or at local vendors. Naturally my work space is often cluttered with multiple knitting pieces, or wood working pieces drying from a coat of fresh stain.
My work had slowly taken over the home, literally! Craft supplies, tool, patterns, yarns, knitting needles and other bits and pieces have slowly taken all available space in our tiny 3 bedroom home.
While out and about shopping one day I noticed a bunch of cute sheds and backyard buildings placed in a section of the mall parking lot. I stopped in to have a peak at these beautiful little buildings, a sign posted inside one in particular mentioned " Office space, play space, storage space, the choice is yours!" PERFECT!
I could have my office "away" from home, but still be at home! I would also be available to tend to my kiddos, have a place for all of my crafting supplies, as well as a space away from the chores. I could focus on my business, and return inside the home to take care of those nagging chores.
Not to mention, I wouldn't feel guilty for ignoring the door bell every time someone came home to visit. I wouldn't even hear it!!
It's HOW MUCH?!
The only teensy little problem I had with these beautiful buildings and sheds was the not so teensy price tags!
We are frugal by nature around here, and the price tags were anything but.
It was decided that we could build this She Shed on our own for a fraction of the cost of buying one already assembled.
It's been a challenge trying to keep to the budget we set, however with a little planning, and by shopping around for used windows and doors we have managed to keep the budget in check. I am proud to say we only had to purchase 1 new window!
Here is a sneak peek at my office in progress, we have been blessed with an amazing family and friends who have offered their time and assistance with this build. It won't be much longer now until I can move my business into a real office!
Did I mention the loft? There is a loft, as the official CEO of my business I declared naps are a must, it's company policy! Naturally the office would need to accommodate this policy. Oh and you know, the kids can have sleep overs now too, so that's a bonus, I guess.

Thank you
I don’t currently have an office, it’s where ever I can find peace and quiet in a comfy chair LOL
Did moving around help?
Yes it did help me, I got more done and I liked the new environment much better. Jay actually mentions changing rooms around in one of his video trainings. It got me out of a slump of not being able to write anything to creating great content.

It looks like a perfect place for no distractions, Brianne, Alan.
I certainly hope so :)
