Pretending
One day I started wondering, “When did I stop pretending?” That question stumped me and to be honest it still stumps me.
As children, pretending was part of our daily activities. We would be cowboys or Indians; mothers and fathers; doctors and lawyers. We had baby dolls so we could be mothers or fathers. Model cars so we could be mechanics. Legos so we could be architects or builders. The list is endless.
Unknowingly one day we just never pretended again. When did this happen? Why did we stop? Did we stop? Is adulting just the real way to pretend. Should we still pretend? Is pretending labeled as something else as an adult.
The last thing I can remember pretending was pouring myself a short-glass of Vernor’s Ginger Ale over ice and pretending it was a glass of Scotch on the rocks. I was approximately 14-years old. Is that the last day I spent pretending?
When did you stop pretending? What was your last memory of the childhood consuming activity?
