~ THE DASH ~

I read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of a friend.

He referred to the dates on her tombstone; her life from beginning to end (1934-1998).

He noted that first came her date of birth and spoke the ending date with tears, but he said what mattered most of all was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time that she spent alive on earth ... And now, only those who loved her know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not how much we own; the cars... the house ... the cash, what matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard ... are there things you'd like to change? For you never know how much time is left, that can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough to consider what's true and real, and always try to understand the way other people Feel.

And be less quick to anger, and show appreciation more, and love the people in our lives like we've never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect, and more often wear a smile... Remembering that this special dash might only last a little while.

Strange that a tiny line used to fill a space can represent an entire lifetime. Ever notice everyone's dash is the same. Because we are all given the same opportunity to make that dash the very best Dash we can.

It's so easy to get caught up in all the 'things' this life has to offer. But when it's all said and done and we enter into life's final chapter, we don't get to take any of that stuff with us. The memories we leave behind will be those times we spent with people, the time we gave, the words of encouragement, the hugs, the laughter and the sincerity of heart.

It also speaks to me about truth and life. There are times when I am doing my marketing and I see the corruption, greed, and ego of people and it is sad. This article puts things in perspective, people should realize that life is precious and we make our own choices. I believe in truth and integrity and this excerpt validates that there is still hope and good people in this world.

"In the end its not the Years in your Life that count. It is the Life in your Years."

We only have so much time to make a difference and I feel that being reminded of the expediency of "living as though today were your last" is benificial.

So, when your eulogy's being read, your life's actions to rehash ... Would you be proud of what they'll say about how you spent your dash?

Great Post! I love it. It makes you think about what you may be missing and where your priorities are.

Marty I really enjoyed reading this post, it is well written and certainly paints the big picture well! Great Job!

I love this Marty.. we should always try to be good to one another because we don't know our time.. I lost my boyfriend this last March and it's been truly hard for me but looking back at those moments we had together I feel so happy because he was with me.. I miss him everyday.. anyway I really enjoyed reading your blog.. all the Best, Emi

Thanks you so much for that post!

Great post, Marty. That's why I try not to feel too guilty that I'm out playing with my kids instead on the computer working. Some people say it takes 18-hour days to be successful, but my life is not about sitting in front of a computer all day. I want to truly enjoy my time here on Earth. While I love my computer, there's so much to see and do outside. Thanks for the great reminder.

Very true Marty, and something to remember whenever we get caught up in the trivia that doesn't really matter. I'll never think of a dash the same way again.

Marty, this is lovely and so true! Thank you for sharing it. Dash it well, my life and live life on fire!

Hey, I liked that. It's a very good point and put things into a different perspective. I think I'll start to check your blog more often to see if you've got anything else up =]
