Your brain needs you to move to stay sharp

  • Do you sometimes feel that sitting by the computer drains your energy?
  • Have you ever noticed that just sitting for a long time makes you passive?
  • Wouldn't it be nice to get an energy boost in just a couple of minutes?

I just recently (about an hour ago) did something that I now have decided to do more often, and more regularly while I am working at my computer. Maybe several times a day, at least once: MOVE MY BODY! Sounds pretty obvious, right? But the case is, if you are a bit like me, I tend to get so involved in my work (especially on my passions when working with a new article or updating my website here at WA) that I might sit for hours. And that just happened!

Sometimes I believe we need to be that passionate and dedicated too, to get things done and to move forward. But my advice is, only do so when you are in the flow. The thing is, that quite often it happens to me that I got stuck, I can sit and look at the screen for minutes (hours?) without solving my issue and without getting any new ideas. And I end up clicking on a tempting title somewhere, and suddenly I realize I have been suuuurfing the endless Internet for quite some while. Without having written one more letter... Am I the only one?

Luckily, there is a quick fix to this problem. So that we can get new energy. To get our brains in creative modus again. To get focused and get back on track. Yes, you might already have guessed the solution: Get up from your chair and MOVE!

And that's exactly what I did. I literally got up from the chair, found my gym/fitness mat, and started working out. Not any tough exercises, I didn't even get sweat! I just made some exercises for my back, arms and upper body muscles. Maybe for ten minutes or so. The result? This article :)

It might sound like I never work out, but that's not true either, because I love being outside and enjoy the wonderful nature in my area where I live in Norway. I love cross country skiing, to run in the forest and hike in the mountains. But today I was sitting working, there was no time to get outside. Sounds familiar?

To be honest, I felt a bit stressed and having the feeling of not getting anywhere before I GOT UP FROM THAT CHAIR. Afterwards, I felt like a new person! Ok, I will try not to exaggerate, but it did really, really good!

To be clear: I am not trying to make you stop writing your articles or to quit your passion in working online. Because that demands that you sit for quite a while each day. But again, there are apps for anything you might think of. There are apps for reading websites and news/articles loud for you. And even better, the same apps can read your own material loud, while you WALK. Which might be a great, second quality test before you post your new article?

The funny thing is that while I was sitting and suuuurfing the web, I came over an article about the value and effect of walking meetings. So I guess something good came out of it anyhow? I shared this article on my Google+ account for those wanting to read it all, which I highly recommend (no, I don't receive any commisions for clicks on the article). I was just excited about it. Excellent thank you! When I worked in an office it was frowned upon to regularly get up and move around, the mentality of some - rather sheepish and backward!

I eject myself a lot more over a long winter.

It is so easy to get passive during a long winter and go into hibernation like the bears :) I am glad to hear that you eject yourself, Michael, I think we all need to get up and get out in the fresh, cold air. Improving health!

I totally agree that you need to move about more. I've spent a lot of my life as a dance teacher and although I love writing, I find I have to get up and move about every hour or my legs feel really heavy and sluggish..........and then my brain follows! :)

Great to hear, Gail, that you experience the same way too. Do you know NLP? The techniques that are used to get the brain "working" along by activating the body? It sounds a little like you do.. The body and the brain work together, they are connected and have influence on each other. I certainly understand that as a dance teacher, you have experienced this over and over again. Which has double positive effects: Health and creative energy :)

I definitely know NLP as I qualified as a trainer of it a few years ago after doing my Certificate and Masters, so yes, I understand the connection of physiology and status that NLP talks about. NLP is one of the things that my niche site is about too along with the law of attraction which also talks about the link between your physical, mental and emotional well being. You cannot separate them in my book! :)

It seemed you knew NLP, and you definitely did :) I just took a quick look at your niche website, and I read the introduction part which I found highly interesting. It doesn't appear from my profile that I share the same views on life approach as you do, but from what I read, it really seems so. Looking forward to connect more with you in the days ahead.
