Domain Inspiration
To get away from my 9-5 work week, I set out for the mountains almost every weekend. Mentally and physically it always brings me good but maybe a little domain inspiration will come this time.
I love dogs. Particularly my goober of a mutt, Mila ;) We are the ultimate mountain duo and seeing her frolic in the wilderness brings me pure happiness.
My goal this summer is to hike to new heights (no pun intended). This weekend I chose Elephant Lake in the Eastern Sierras. My guidebook brought us right to the trail head. Good directions. Off to a good start.
To get to Elephant Lake Trail, the topo said to hike down about 2 miles passing through a meadow ("Duck Lake"). At the meadow, you will see cows grazing.
Guidebook Warning: Do NOT disturb the cows. (Who'd want to disturb them anyways?!)
From Duck Lake it would be about another 3 miles south to Rock Lake. And then another 3 miles Southwest to Elephant Lake.
About a mile in, I heard the bells. Mila was in full alert mode. We get to the meadow and there they were. Spotted. Mila is pretty docile and very aware of her surroundings. Often I actually trust her more than myself in the outdoors so I decided to keep her off lead. I didn't know, however, how she would react to the cows that were 4x her size.
Turns out, Mila had absolutely zero interest in the cows. Nada.
The dog decides to turn her utmost attention to the pasture of COW PIES! Let me tell you...she was rolling in them, sliding through them, smearing them everywhere. Doggy heaven. Oh, she was having a blast all right.
Then, you have me. Wide-eyed, perplexed at how much fun she was having, not sure if I should be mad or cringe at how gross it was. Then again, she is a dog.
All I could think about was the stink that would penetrate from her fur on the hour drive home. She reeked and she reeked bad. I gave her my "I am not happy" look and she just gave me her "I'm sorry, I just couldn't resist" puppy eyes.
Despite my cow pie nightmare, we continued on and found beautiful Elephant Lake in Alpine County. She found the biggest branch to play fetch and swim around with. Aka - time to wash off some of that stank!
As for my domain inspiration, I don't think today was the day. Or was it?
Things to remember: prepare the car for stinky dogs after hikes.
Home at last and yes, bath time for pooch!
