Social Media Content Writing Guide: Writing Posts People Actually Want to Read

Social media content can look deceptively simple. A caption might only be a few sentences long, but getting those sentences right can take more thought than writing a much longer article.

After working with content and digital marketing, I've come to think that good social media writing sits somewhere between strategy and personality. You need to understand your audience, platform, and objective, but you also need to sound like an actual human being.

Here's my practical guide to writing social media content that has a better chance of earning attention.

Start With The Purpose

Before writing anything, ask yourself: What is this post supposed to do?

Is it designed to:

  • Educate?
  • Start a conversation?
  • Build brand awareness?
  • Drive traffic?
  • Promote a product?
  • Tell a story?
  • Encourage someone to take action?

A common mistake is trying to make one post do everything.

In my opinion, a post with one clear purpose is usually stronger than one stuffed with five different messages.

If I have to reread a caption to figure out what the point is, the audience probably will too.

Write for People, Not Just Algorithms.

Yes, algorithms matter. Reach matters. Keywords and hashtags can matter.

But none of those things can rescue content that people don't actually want to read.

Your audience isn't a collection of engagement statistics. There are people on the other side of the screen deciding whether your content deserves another five seconds of their attention.

That's why I prefer writing conversationally.

Instead of:

"Our innovative solution helps businesses optimize their digital marketing strategies."

Try:

"Your marketing strategy might not need more content. It might need better content."

The second version gives the reader something to think about.

The Hook Has a Job

The first sentence needs to earn the second sentence.

That doesn't necessarily mean using clickbait. A good hook can simply introduce a problem, question, observation, or unexpected idea.

For example:

"Your followers aren't ignoring your content. They might just not understand it."

Now there's a reason to keep reading.

Some useful hook approaches include:

  • Ask a specific question.
  • Challenge a common assumption.
  • Identify a problem.
  • Share an observation.
  • Introduce a surprising fact.
  • Start with a short story.
  • Make the reader curious about what comes next.

Personally I think the best hooks create curiosity without making promises the rest of the post can't deliver.

Keep it Human

This is probably my biggest piece of advice.

Social media is full of polished, generic content. Personality gives people a reason to remember yours.

Use your own observations, humour, examples, opinions, and writing style. My personal rule is:

If I wouldn't actually say it, I probably shouldn't post it.

Make it Easier to Read

Short paragraphs, clear wording, and a little breathing room can make a huge difference. A simple structure is:

Hook → Main point → Useful takeaway → Call to action

You don't need complicated formulas. You just need to make the message easy to follow.

Give People a Reason to Care

Before publishing, ask yourself:

"What does the reader get from this?"

It could be a useful tip, a new perspective, an answer to a problem, or simply something interesting to talk about.

In my opinion, the best social media content isn't necessarily the longest or most polished. It's the content that gives someone a reason to stop, think, remember, or act.
