Different traffic under the same keyword?

So I was just doing some ideas research here at WA with a Keyword Tool and I actually got very confused.
In the first picture where the traffic is around 18K, the search term was only "How to" and this is what I got. When in the search term I put all the phrase "how to french braid" the results for the monthly traffic came completely different.
Can anyone answer that?
