Offline for 3 Days: A Typhoon Reminder to Stay Prepared

Hi WA family,

I’ve been offline for the past three days, and I wanted to share why, especially since this community has become such a meaningful part of my daily rhythm.

A super typhoon recently swept through our area here in the Philippines, and as is often the case during these storms, we experienced a prolonged power outage. Living in a country that faces multiple typhoons each year, power interruptions have become a familiar challenge. But this one hit harder than usual.

Without electricity, I couldn’t work on my website or stay active in the WA community. My two small power banks helped keep my phone alive just long enough to check in briefly, but they weren’t enough to power my laptop. That meant no writing, no editing, no engagement, and a lot of waiting.

This experience reminded me of the importance of being prepared, especially when building an online business in a region prone to natural disasters. I’m now seriously considering investing in a larger power bank that can support my laptop. That way, even in the middle of a storm, I can continue working and stay connected.

If you live in an area where power outages are common, I’d love to hear how you stay productive during those times. Let’s learn from each other and build resilience into our routines.

Grateful to be back online and reconnecting with you all.

Glad you weathered the typhoon!

I spend a fair amount of time on the southern Gulf Coast of the US, so years ago, I decided RV life was the way to go! When the weather gets bad, I can hit the road with a generator, solar, Starlink, and an inverter. I can always stream movies and be online. 😁

For a few days of power outages, a small generator would go a long way to keep you online and comfortable.

I’m truly grateful we made it through safely. Howard.

Your RV setup sounds like a dream! Mobile, self-sufficient, and ready to roll when the weather turns. 😊

Living in the Philippines, where typhoons are part of life, I really need to invest in backup power.

Glad to hear that you are safe! Did you have any damage by the storm?

I have many backup devices and 3 generators. I live in Florida, lol. But, that doesn't help much if I can't access he internet. Now that I have Xfinity, I'm constrained by the power company to be online. We used to have Starlink, but that would go out in a major storm/heavy clouds.

I can use my iPhone as a hot spot, but it still depends on the towers being available.

Good luck with the recovery, if necessary :)

We're okay, thanks, Teri.

I can't say the same for those on the other side, as they faced signal number 5 while we only had signal number 1. However, the winds were strong, and the rain was quite heavy. When it rains for several days, we're prone to landslides.

A former colleague and friend moved to Florida over a year ago. She said it's a beautiful place. But she also mentioned that Florida often experiences hurricanes.

Keep safe always and have a great day!

Glad that you and your family are safe Alice, stay safe!

Yes, Wen, thanks.

Excuse me, Wen.

I am going to echo Wen here, Alice.

Glad y'all are safe and well.

Thank you, JD. Despite three days and nights of power outages, heavy rain, and strong winds, we are okay.

Very thankful for that, Alice.

More fun in the Philippines! :-)

That one missed me in Cebu.

A few years ago, we had Typhoon Odette. It looked like a war zone afterwards. No power for several weeks, No WIFI, No water. It was being in survival mode.

Otherwise for the shorter outages, more family time.

Welcome back Alice!

Yes, I remember Super Typhoon Odette (Rai) in 2021. Were you here during Super Typhoon Yolanda, which was even more devastating?

Anyway, during the past three days without power, I managed to do some general cleaning and, of course, spent more quality time with my family. 😊

Glad to be back online.

Typhoon Yolanda and the Earthquake on Bohol were the year before I came to the Philippines. ::: whew :::

Good for you, Mel.

Please reply in English.

WA is an English speaking platform.

Thanks,

Teri

Here's what he said, Teri.

"I'm sorry you had to go through all that. Power outages used to be one of my biggest concerns, too. Thankfully, we now have a generator that can run the house easily as long as we have gas. We usually have enough gas to last 3–5 days, depending on how much electricity we need. I'm glad you're back!"

Looks like he simply repeated what Lisa said.
