Telsla Cybertruck Reveal

Wow .. .maybe I am too old to really appreciate new innovative styling, but no, this just does not appeal to me!

The big reveal tonight was a disaster .... it started 10 minutes late, there was no sound on the live stream and the vehicle emerged from smoke and laser lights with what appears to be destroyed side windows and a design that only an engineer might appreciate.

My first impression was this looks a lot like the Starship (the rocket designed to go to Mars) all stainless steel ... which also exploded today (during testing)!

What can we learn from this PR nightmare?

  1. Make sure you understand what your customers want, not what you want to produce!
  2. When doing a livestream, make sure it is tested and ready to go with sound and on time ... I watched the number of connections quickly drop when people realized there was no sound.
  3. All that hype for such a short presentation ... kind of insulting to the potential customers, once they got over the design shock.
  4. Keep it simple ... don't over hype your product or services

I have great admiration for Elon Musk but he makes some pretty serious mistakes at times when dealing with the public!

Only time will tell of course ... the hope is that it is an engineering wonder!

Unfortunately the presentation was so short there was not time to learn anything about the vehicle!

Any thoughts?

Allan

He is bold and he is brave. I liked when the person broke the windows. Actually funny. But it reminded me of starting a business. People have these amazing ideas, build a website around it, promote it and it flops. Most people would have quit. I love that he pushes the envelope. And he keeps pushing regardless of what people think of him. He won't let others distract him from being creative. I really like that about him.

Yes, as a disruptor you can not allow other people's opinions to stand in the way of your vision!
The window episode should never have happened ... they should have tested it first or at least checked the specs to make sure it would withstand that kind of force!
But they are risk takers ... and that is what happens when you take risks ...
Any long term harm done to the brand ... probably not! No one will forget this though ... maybe they will use it to make a point down the road and show how they can respond to a problem!

You are so right. Elon Musk is an extraordinary scientist but this presentation was not extraordinary at all. This car is a big failure. Maybe as you say so well, that he wanted to please himself before thinking about his future client. What was ridiculous was those broken windows that were supposed to withstand the pressure of a bullet. I hope it was only a first try and that he will not keep this model that seems to land from another planet. It's true, we don't need to think too complicated to hope to interest a public because sometimes the message may not pass.

He made an interesting comment ... that this design may be the prototype for a Mars Rover ... it may be more suited for that, I am not sure ... he is a visionary so I am sure there is a background story on this concept. Only time will tell .. LOL

Elon’s presentation speech wasn’t great at all - seemed like he was making it up as he went along. But I don’t doubt this will sell like “slushees at the beach”. For those unfamiliar with that idiom....that’s a frozen kids drink that comes with a spoon.
And there just isn’t anything else like this truck which means that by next year at this time, Ford and Chevy and Dodge will have something that looks just like it but will go zero to 60 even quicker, and can climb buildings like Spider-Man most likely.

Alex mentioned below that Elon broke the windows demonstrating how strong the bulletproof glass was ... he was probably furious at the result which reflected on his poor presentation! Too bad, it was a great chance to make a good impression!

Yes, that was just adding to the "less than perfect" show. An yet, my wife still said, "I want one!" So funny.

She must be an adventurous soul!

Oh yes - no fear of trying out the latest and greatest things.

You are exactly right, his speech doesn't have to be great, these things will fly off the shelves so to speak.

You know it - thanks for your thoughts on this! 👍

Wow, looks like a project we had to do as sixth formers,

In the UK there is this weird programme my other half watches, it’s something to do with Scrapyard Motors, as the name suggests a bunch of enthusiasts team up and compete to see who can get the greatest motorised and working piece of junk.

Ta Da, .......voila ladies and gents here is the entry I bring before you.

    🧐

Yes, I can not appreciate the design, technically it is probably a engineering wonder ... but ... no, I will wait for version 2!

This is the first I've seen of this and I'm going to take a look at what's going on with it. They've done a pretty brilliant job of things so far so there's probably a solid plan behind this. That being said I won't be wanting one!

    Thanks for this Allan!

Agree ... I have followed Elon with great admiration ... disappointed in this though!
