I can’t believe I’m on Course 4, lesson 5. After feeling like I wouldn’t be able to pick it up again from taking 2 breaks, I’m really happy to say that getting back into has been a breeze, like riding a bicycle… :)

I’ve learned so much and still eager to keep learning. My site is looking very close to the way I want it to. Technically, I’ve been with WA for 6 months but because of my breaks I would say it’s more like 4 months. Anyhoo, it feels like it’s gone by very quickly.

One of the things that I focused a few weeks on was Referral Spam. I had to try a few different things before I found what actually worked though. I learned that there are 2 kinds of spam - Ghost spam which is the hardest to get rid of and Crawler spam. These two need to be dealt with differently otherwise blocking them won't work.

I finally came to a website that showed me step-by-step how to get rid of this and I learned that the way I had done it was only masking the problem. I had even excluded the entire country of Russia but learned in this website that it is not necessary to do. Also, if you don't want to go into your htaccess file via Filazilla that is ok as this website shows you how to block Crawler spam via google analytics.

I really wanted to nip this in the bud so that I can start seeing if I am getting any traffic. So, after 3 weeks of trying all this out I have no more referral spam and noticed that my traffic has drastically dwindled but I would much rather see low numbers with real visitors than high numbers of spam sites invading my website. Yay, mission accomplished! ;)

Also, I’m happy to say that low hanging fruit works! I’ve checked 4 of my low hanging fruit posts on google and they are all in the first page for my chosen hanging fruit keyword. And thought I’d mention that google+ has also indexed my posts which I think is pretty cool!! :)
