How I Use my Day Job Skills to Kick off my Affiliate Business

I'm just shy of 1 month into Wealthy Affiliate and building my site about traveling with babies. My goal is to help new moms and dads plan still enjoy their trips with their baby - it can be hard, but there are lots of products and tips and tricks I've learned along the way to make it as easy as possible. Right now I am trying to spend my time building content based on low competition keywords, although my niche does have a lot of competition from prominent sites. The low competition keywords do exist though, and I'm loving the training and the tools that come with a Premium Membership to help us navigate and choose the best keywords out of the millions possible to choose from.

In my normal day job I have to build quarterly and yearly strategies for my department inline with my multinational company's goals, and then ensure my team is executing on that strategy. While my end goal is that one day my affiliate marketing skills allow me to quit my day job I'm using my day job techniques to create a strategy and focus around getting my first website off the ground. I'm going to share my tips and my strategy below:

1. Time Commitment and Sticking to It

I have quite a demanding day job that takes more than 40 hours a week of my time, plus a mom of a 1 year old and a husband who's a pilot, so while I don't have as much spare time as I'd like to build my site I have decided how much time per week I can and WILL spend on Wealthy Affiliate.

I have decided I will spend 8 hours per week on my website for the first 90 days. Whether that's 8 hours on the weekend or 1-2 hours a day I am committed to it.

Did I fall behind this week? Yes. I know this happens, but I am motivated to press on and dedicate additional hours this next week if I can't make it up this weekend.

2. Create Strategy, Goals and Action Plan

My year one strategy is to drive traffic traffic to my site through content and social media marketing relying on organic traffic via high demand / low competition keywords in my niche of baby travel. I am going to focus on baby gear products which are best to travel with, fun destinatations to travel with baby, and tips and tricks from my life in the tourism industry and my husband's career as an airline pilot.

My goal is to generate $3,000.00 in total revenue by the end of the year and by the time I've hit my 1 year mark with Wealthy Affiliate to have generated $5,000.00 in that month.

My Action Plan: 30/60/90 Days

  1. First 30 days
    1. Complete the first two levels of the training
    2. Build the basic structure of the website
    3. Create content based on 10 low competition keywords
  2. 60 days
    1. Complete the Making Money level of the training
    2. Join all of my relevant affiliate programs and build all links into my site
    3. Produce 10 pieces of content of high demand/low competition keywords
    4. Learn how to make the homepage on Wordpress to make it look like a website
  3. 90 days
    1. Complete the Social Engagement level of training and launch social media profiles
    2. Have homepage and all destination landing pages created
    3. Have all product recommendation pages created
    4. Have 30 total pages and/or posts of content

3. Using my scarce resources wisely

Since I'm not planning on doing any paid search until I am generating enough revenue to want to invest, my only scarce resource right now is time. Like I mentioned above, I have 8 hours per week or 1-2 hours per day to work with. I need to use that time wisely in order to reach my effectivel execute my strategy and achieve goals.

With my action plan above that I am sticking to I will make goals ahead of the hour I'm going to devote to Wealthy affiliate to fulfill the action items in my plan. If I have one hour a night I will already have that keyword selected and use that hour to write my post. I don't deviate from how I decided I would spend that time

One hour I devoted to diving into Wordpress a bit further than we go into during the training as I wanted to understand how to best structure my website for my vision. That hour I knew I wouldn't get any content created but I learned a lot from trial and error with my website.

Conculsion

As you learn your strategy can and should evolve. Like any startup business the key to success is really learning and focus. Its always better to have a sharp laser focus on 1 thing than try to do several things at once. One month in and I find myself fighting the urge to skip ahead and start making money, but that's not the best approach. Let's master and build up out content. I will relentlessly focus on churning out as much content as we can while focusing on the basics of my website structure and follow my action plan accordingly.

It seems to me that you have laid out a very realistic and achievable strategy and I have no doubt that you will go far using this kind of planning and determination.

Sometimes distractions or life gets in the way, but as long as you have your path marked out clearly, you can make up for these periods and still stay on track...

Cheers and best of luck!
