For years, I have been very careful to monitor page speed on my sites. Web surfers just aren't patient.
Affiliate banner ads and AdSense are notorious for slowing things down.
I'm new to Wordpress so take anything I say with a grain of salt, please.
I'm in the process of moving all my sites to Wordpress here at WA because I'm pretty impressed with what I can do. The availability of the different plug ins to make my sites function the way they do is also impressive.
Right away I noticed the connection between page speed and plug ins. The difficulty was that I needed certain capabilities on my sites. Hunting and pecking for plug ins that won't affect speed was a daunting task. So I looked around and found ZenCache.
ZenCache works behind the scenes to make sure my sites are zippy. Now when I introduce a new plug in then speed is corrected. I'm very happy with this page speed plug in.
Plug -ins are just another hunk of code you theme has to recognize and process. The more plug-ins, the longer it will take. Usually we are only talking nanoseconds, but as said, if poorly coded, or not tested properly agains WordPress and Theme, they can slow you down.
I installed a plugin a while back (can't remember which), but it kept running in background even after page loaded. At least that is what I think it was doing. I think the rule of thumb about plug-ins is "less is better". But I humbly stand to be corrected. GET-ER-DONE!

Try "Share Buttons" by AddToAny. I tried several SM plugins and had the same problem. But this one does not slow my site down at all, AND, it is an "all-in-one" SM sharer, because you hover your cursor over the button (which you can customize the appearance of, and even add a call to action tag line) and ALL the SM's pop up for readers to choose from. I added a signup for email page plugin and the loading speed slows down quite a bit. So I delete and go to paste codes on pages instead. Speed went up again. Now figuring how to delete the extra page created by the plugin. Can't find the page anywhere but is classified 404 error on Google webmaster tool. Careful not to add plugins unless absolutely necessary.
