Being Consistent

I have worked retail for about 5 years now and managed for about 2. One of the pillars I look for in an employee is consistency. When interviewing people I can usually get a pretty good feel for if someone is going to be consistent. The reason this attribute is so important to me is because I had a particular experience with an employee.

Lets say the employees name was David. David was one of my first new hires I ever hired as a cashier. He immediately began to shine. I would have other managers coming to me saying he is doing really well and they were impressed by him. Pretty quickly we made him a full time employee as a result of his work ethic. Well after about a month of being full time David began to show up late. It wouldn't be very often, but occasionally he would be 10 minutes late. Then his attitude became spotty. 80% of the time he had a great attitude and 20% it would be poor and he would even be rude to other managers. The money in his cash drawers began to be off. After about 2 months of not knowing what version of David I was going to get finally had to let him go.

This life experience taught me a many good things about life. David was an excellent employee at times. But other times he was rude and careless. I couldn't trust David because I did not know who David I was going to get. Or when I wasn't there how was he treating my customers .

Sometimes I think about that situation in a different context. I consider myself David, and I put search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing ETC) in my position. Being consistent when creating a website can be hard. There are days when I don't really want to work on my website. I would rather be out hiking or reading a Tom Clancy novel. But search engines being the "boss" want to see consistency out of you. Why would they rank you higher and risk their reputation if you are not going to reward then with quality content.

One of the biggest things that google ranks your website on is consistent, quality, and original content. If they feel that your content is just being copied and pasted from another website they won't give you any attention. If you are writing 200 word quips instead of 500+ word articles they won't pay as much attention to you.

All this is important when you are writing. So make sure to be consistent when you are creating blog posts. Don't allow laziness to sneak in and cause you to lose your ranking because you were not in the mood that week.
