A Keychain you say?

Yes a "keychain".

It's using Beacon Technology. Beacon Technology has been out for years but never before has it been this readily available for the "little guy" at an affordable price.

Thanks to Google's 'nearby' technology a beacon can now be programmed with a 40 character phrase and an attached link to send an ad out to nearby Android phones with their bluetooth on, which take up about 60% of the market in the US and 87.5% of international, within 100 yards of "Yes, A KEYCHAIN".

Ok so you are thinking how many people really keep their Bluetooth on, right? You would be surprised. Ask yourself a better question though. When your traveling, how many people are around you? And what percentage of those people do you think actually have on their bluetooth? There are 7.5 Billion people in the world. Almost 326 in a half million in the US. With a little over 8 million of them in New York City. So lets do some numbers. You have an offer that earns $1.00 when someone signs up let's say for free. And then when they upgrade and like what you have you make $15.00 a month. So you put your add on a keychain and drive through NYC. 1% of the population sees your ad. That's 81,751 people see it, in a day.

Ok let's go further and say only 1% of them sign up to your free offer. That's 817 which just earned you $817.00, "in a day". Now lets say 1% of them upgrade. That's about 8 people upgrade "in a day" earning you $120 a month of one days work. Ok now think about the bigger picture. You are doing this everyday. If you continue to get this rate everyday in this area you will add $120 p/mo of income every day. Even if it were half that wouldn't you be happy? Even a quarter? $30 a day being added onto your monthly income will add up to an amount "I'm sure" anyone could be happy with. I mean that's like adding $900 a month of income month after month from one device at very low expectations in NYC. After a year, you wouldn't be happy? Come on... really?

It doesn't stop there.

You will get questions and everyone will want this technology. It can be used for almost any business. Saturate the market you say? Make people angry? Cause them spam? "What?"

Oh no no no, you got it all wrong!

It broadcasts a message that shows up as a notification using 'nearby' technology and it goes away when the person is out of the 100 yard range. There is no collection of data, it is not a text, email or push notification which generates from apps already installed on your device. It could tell your customers about such technology you have however. And they are able to opt out of the notifications. I myself really wouldn't bother because I don't want to miss anything. I don't look at my phone when I'm driving nor should anyone. If you are worried about causing trouble there, honestly those people are already doing that when they shouldn't with or without your notification. But how many people are walking the streets while you drive down them, 'not touching your cellphone while driving' I might ad?

Is it legal you wonder?

Well would it being with in CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission) regulations verified not to violate anti-spam laws please you? Would knowing that It's fully CRTC, CASL (Canada's Anti-Spam Law), Anti Spam, FCC (Federal Communications Commission) and FTC (Federal Trade Commission) compliant please you even further?

It does not block anyone's bluetooth devices already connected therefore no potential for interference. It does not violate anyones privacy. Messages can be changed as often as a business owner would like however takes 24 hours to be approved. "Yes approved" and by a real person at that. No-one will ruin this for us with their rubbish. lol. You can have as many units has you want. The sky really is the limit here folks.

Still confused?

What is "Nearby Notifications' Technology?

Well it's an Android feature which enables contextual discovery. When you associate your website or app with a beacon and devices nearby have their bluetooth on, it will display the message in the 'Nearby' section of the Google Settings. If you opt out then you don't have to be irritated with your neighbor telling you they have a free donut when you buy a large coffee. So no angry neighbors to worry about. No donuts in your face.

Don't think, for one minute, that Bar owner on 1st and 3rd is worried about the fact that it doesn't go out to iPhones either.

No no no!

Not when he sets a Facebook Event for a band playing on Saturday, then links his beacon to tell passerby's about it, and they click on the Event link and of course sharing it. Thereby sharing it with all their Bar loving buddies who may or may not have an Android but are surely ready to "Rock".

If you don't see how this technology can be used well, you probably aren't going to do too well with business. Most likely you see it and already are like many going "take me to the bank, short of what I drank" a little humor there, ha ha.

And considering tracking technology we also have available to us, we will know which devices are getting responses and where they are traveling. We can, like all other marketing campaigns, adjust our ad wording until we say just the right thing.

You're still skeptical. I can tell.

Have you read that people can get into your cell phone through bluetooth technology somewhere?

Well they can.

You can also get a virus if you download an app from a third party provider be it on a Mac or not. You can run into trouble if you connect your device to an open un-secure wifi. You can also get into an accident if you text while you drive... What do you do? You choose not to do those things that will harm you or your devices... You get educated.

But how do we have our cell phones linked to our vehicles on a day to day basis? How do we use our smart watches if we are so worried about the security of it? How do we feel confident with our health checking devices we grow so depend on?

The fact is someone cannot get into your device if your bluetooth is not discoverable and within 300ft of them. For an Android that means putting it in "hidden" mode. And for all phones its good practice to pay attention to your surroundings. Don't sync your bluetooth devices in high traffic areas where someone can get in on the action which, by the way, is more possible if you are on an insecure open wifi. A hacker only has to be 300 ft away when you're are syncing to get what he may need from you. However, they will only get what is on your device at the time until it's out of range.

Always evaluate your security settings and disable anything you don't use or use often for that matter. Take advantage of security options your device offers like authentication and encryption. Be it a cellphone, tablet or computer.

Consider what information they could get even if they could get it. Pictures & Videos, Contacts & Text messages. Unless you are famous it's not that terrible considering. So set some ground rules there too.

Break it down!

-- Put your Pictures, videos, documents & even files in a secure App that is approved by either the Apple Store or Google Play. (see my website for suggestions)

--Don't text personal information of any kind such as documents, videos or pictures you don't want seen and if you have or do at least be sure to delete conversations often. Don't forget about deleting Facebook messenger conversations too.

-- Don't use open insecure wifi

-- Don't download third party apps you are not absolutely sure are secure which isn't any different than not clicking on a link in your email you don't know if you can trust.

-- Do not sync devices in high traffic areas - Get your watch and car synced before you leave the house.

-- Download and install regular security updates for any device (not to be confused with an upgrade which change the Operating System almost entirely.) No, an update will help keep your device (any device) updated for security measures. This is your best form of protection...but shouldn't be the only.

-- Stay up to date with the newer technology. With new technology comes better security. Any cell phone for example is at much greater risk using Bluetooth 1.x, 2.0 or 4.0-LE than the newest versions.

-- To clear your conscience more it's recommended to turn off Bluetooth when you are not using it.

-- Headsets make it easier to eavesdrop on conversations. Limit serious conversations relaying personal information to your LAN line or at home in general. If you can change the default PIN do so to something hard to guess. Again a word in general is easier to remember.

-- For the sake of safety, don't have conversations that require the transferring personal information while on your cell phone when your bluetooth is on.

-- Companies develop mobile security policies for very good reason. Follow their lead.

LOOK ! Here is a major fact...

Technology is here to stay.

It may change throughout the years as we gain more knowledge and there will always be issues. If you are going to have a device study the issues involved often to protect yourself but don't think you can't enjoy it.

If we kept their distance from horses because they could spook easily, kick or run over us, then we would have never grown to enjoy riding them. We learn what may happen and we make adjustments to protect ourselves...

Don't let these issues stop you from doing business with this technology, find a way to make it work for you there always is.

So welcome to the new age of technology. Of course I have more info listed in my website and some options you may like too... Happy Trails.

Wow That sounds Cool, Like you said Andrea Technology is here to stay. So will we be Behind the curb or Ahead?

I Liked Like to Choose Ahead. great Article, Thanks for the Insight on the subject!

This sounds like it could be a big boon to small businesses.

It already is to big business. We are learning how to expand it well to the "little guy" which is what my site I built with WA tries to focus on. Definitely not something to just pass by.
