Writing Beyond the Niche

So Valentine's day is upon us, and I am sure many of you have big plans sharing it with that someone special in your lives. Did you Google, "Valentine's day ideas" at any point this year? I bet many of you did, even if you won't admit it!

Many people all over the world are looking at "holiday related" topic's right now. Have you written your latest articles with that in mind? Or are you asking, well Valentine's doesn't relate to my "niche".

Sometimes we start to get tunnel-vision when we are writing content for our websites, we have that main topic (or niche) in mind, and we forget to explore the world around us, as if nothing else matters but hammering out that next bit of information related directly to our niche.

Maybe your niche is kitchen appliances (yes that's a little general, its just an example), so your site has great reviews of different kitchen appliances, Maybe recipes of things to make with that great set of kitchen appliances that your readers own (you know, the ones you sold them in your Amazon Affiliate store). How about an article about enticing your loved one with a great Valentine's day dinner that you can make with those shiny new kitchen appliances.

How about a smoking cessation niche, you have a great Valentine's day sale on, how about an article about how much your loved one hates your stinky smelly smoking habit, quit for her this Valentine's day (theme). When I was involved in online dating many years ago, I was a smoker, and that eliminated a good number of prospective first dates. You can spin it however you want.

Another hot topic right now is the Sochi Winter Olympics. How can you spin that into your articles? Kitchen appliances -> Sochi cuisine. Smoking cessation -> healthy lifestyle -> athletes. These are very simple examples to get you thinking.

When thinking about a trend to write about, make sure you are also focusing on what people are looking for. Think not only about what they are interested in finding, but why they are searching and why they are interested in that topic. People are searching for Sochi Winter Olympics, ask yourself why, narrow down the niche a bit, to cater it to your article (Niche Marketing 101). Think about the emotion's you can target in your readers, Sochi Winter Olympics, medal's won, I am proud to be a Canadian (yes I am), so I want my teams to do well. The key here is proud, cater your writing style to your patriotic readers.

While it may be a little late to get your articles published in the Valentine's day theme, and maybe even Sochi Winter Games, don't forget Easter, Mother's day, and other big news events are just around the corner. Make sure you get in early so your friendly neighborhood search engine has time to index it!

Sound advice. I put them into my writing schedule 6 months ahead. :) Beverley

That is a great point, something I need to start building is my writing schedule, would probably help me get better focused. That works well for things like holidays that happen at specific times, however sometimes events happen that we have to be prepared to jump on them immediately. How about celebrity wedding announcements or deaths (not that I am encouraging people to profit from other people's pain and suffering, I am a big believer in writing ethically), but just examples off the top of my head here. Events can happen at any time, anywhere, not everything can be scheduled.

On a side note, how long does it take for search engines to index new articles?

Ah, you are so right! I've got some writing to do, thank you. lol

It is kinda funny, I was listening to the radio on my way home from dropping my son off at school this morning, and I heard the DJ's talking about Sochi, which to be honest I haven't been following nearly as much as I have past Olympics, and I started thinking about how big of a "market" that could be tapped into, just on this topic alone, which lead me to hammering out this post this morning.

Sometimes it's little and completely unrelated things that get the ideas flowing.
