Swapping comment or A-B trading Comment is dangerous - Here is My Idea
What we are doing now in the "give and take comment" thread is wrong. Not the thread or the concept itself, but the way we are doing it.
We are only making an A-B link trade, also named reciprocal link trade. And this is bad.
Long ago, Google pulled the plug on that technique. They considered it as a way to trick them, and this is entirely correct.
The only solution I see to that is to post a comment without posting any domain in the URL box and using a fake account each time. Instead of using our regular Gravatar account, we just use a unique random fake account with a fake email. The email doesn't have to be a working one.
You can use a name generator site like http://www.fakenamegenerator.com/ and use the info generated. You also have to change them each time you comment on a blog and, of course, you must leave the domain name box empty when you post your comment.
To get your reciprocal comment back, you just have to mention the name used in the trading comment post or in PM.
From now on this is what I'm going to do. So if you want to trade comment with me, keep in mind that I'm going to erase your URL and not publish your comment if you have already posted on my blog using the same info. On my side of course I'm going to do just that.

The point of the comment-for-comment thread is not for backlinks: it is for site engagement. Kyle and Jason actually encourage you to remove website links from comments anyway unless the commenter's site is in your niche.
Google can tell how many comments a page/site has and treats them as adding relevance to the site. Since it's difficult for someone to generate quality comments from different IP addresses, this tells Google that your site is actually useful to the reader.
How much is actually helps might be debatable, but adding engagement to your site is always good if the comments are longer and of good quality with no spammy text.
