Hi everyone,

I hope you're all doing well.

I'm writing this blog post both as a progress update and a request for guidance from the experienced members here at WA.

My Underwhelming Progress

It's nearly been 100 days since I joined WA, and that's a milestone I was looking forward to.

I know that three months aren't enough whatsoever to see any financial success, but I was expecting to see some traction, to see a gradual increase in traffic, perhaps make my first small commission.

Unfortunately, this still looks like a very distant goal.

Here are my stats on Google and Bing respectively over the last 3 months:

As you can see, my impressions on Google have been dealt a massive blow since the 1st of November.

Partha suggested that the culprit is the November update. He said that even newer sites like mine can get hit.

Diane suggested that these are normal fluctuations and that I shouldn't read too much into it.

Now that it's been two months since the update, I think it's safe to say that these aren't fluctuations — there's a much bigger problem here.

You can see from the chart that back in October, I used to have around 50 daily impressions on Google, so the fact that my daily impressions are now consistently less than 10 is very strange, especially given that I have more than twice as many articles now.

Also, we all know that the search volume of Bing is way smaller than Google, so the fact that my stats are twice as high on Bing says a lot about the issue.

Before I ask for advice, let me give you some background to fill you in on the whole picture.

Blogging

Other than the About Me, Privacy Policy, and Affiliate Disclosure pages, I have published a total of 50 posts so far, 4 of which are product reviews — the rest are purely informational and helpful content.

I can say with full confidence that my content is high quality.

If you have the time and are willing to do me a favour and check that out for yourself, please go ahead and select a post and give it a quick read. My website is linked on my WA profile.

I use AI assistance to write my posts, but I definitely don't publish AI content out of the box. Some articles take me days to complete.

This is all to say that I'm positive that the quality of my content is not the problem.

Other Efforts

Other than blogging, I'm working on two methods to increase my brand awareness:

  1. Pinterest
  2. Quora

I'm fully aware that Quora is a long game, so I'm not expecting anything in the short run.

However, I've been doing reasonably well on Pinterest for a start. Here are my stats over the last month:

I've been watching Jay's Pinterest series and asking the Pinterest guru AndyCalvin for advice, so I'm hoping that I can keep improving my performance on Pinterest.

That's all regarding my off-site endeavours.

DA and Spam Score

I believe that an important part of this discussion is my website's domain authority (DA) and spam score.

Moz gives my website a DA of only 2, and whopping Spam Score of 75%.

Partha told me that increasing DA requires backlinks, and this is something that I plan to start dedicating time towards.

Regarding the Spam Score, when I looked into it, it turns out that for some reason, a weird website apparently created in 2009 somehow links to my website on 81 occasions!

I was told by many people that this shouldn't be a factor, as Google wouldn't penalize you because some spammy website decided to link to you.

However, when I read further about this today, I'm afraid I found otherwise.

Moz themselves say that the Spam Score is the percentage of sites with similar features that have been penalized or banned by Google.

This means that 75% of websites similar to mine have been penalized by Google.

Why on Earth would that be the case? I'm positive that I'm doing a better job than many.

I took matters into my own hands and searched about how to solve this problem. Apparently, the way to do this is to disavow the links by creating a .txt file with the domains that you want no association with, and then uploading it to the Google Search console. I did that today.

Google says that any changes may take a few weeks to be reflected. I'm hoping that my Spam Score goes down and that I perhaps start seeing tangible improvements in my Google impressions as a result.

I Would Appreciate Your Advice

I'm very frustrated.

But the upside of being part of a large community like Wealthy Affiliate is the opportunity to connect with experienced people and learn from their expertise.

They say that to know the road ahead, you should ask those coming back.

If you've encountered similar problems when you first started out and managed to solve them, please share your experience with me.

If you have multiple websites and noticed something similar in one of your newer sites, please share your experience with me.

Thank you for reading.

Hey Yusuf,

I'm much in the same boat as you, only 6 months old, and like you had started to gain some traction on my impressions and clicks which nose-dived at the beginning of Nov so this was a useful question for me too.

I guess from the responses from the experts, those who know, is to keep working on producing sound content and not stress too much about rankings, etc, as that will come in time and provided you are confident of the quality you're putting out and your site gains authority traffic will grow.

Patience is the key! Thanks for this post, as I found the responses very useful.

Hang on in there. I think you have done a fantastic job thus far with your site.

All the best

Cherie :o)

1

Thank you Cherie.

You're right in the sense that this doesn't change what we have to do — we still have to keep producing quality content.

But it's tough to find the drive to continue putting in time and effort in publishing well-crafted articles if no eyes are going to see them.

1

They're not seeing them yet, just keep reminding yourself of that. It'll come in time.

The training here will set you up, the additional guidance and support will help to ensure you're on the right path and you can tweak things along the way.

It'll come. :o)

Yusuf,

Create the following foundational links:

* YouTube Channel
* LinkedIn Business Page
* Facebook Page
* Twitter
* Reddit Subreddit
* Pinterest
* CrunchBase Company Profile
* TikTok
* ProvenExpert
* Google Business Profile

From there, you fill out all the information and be sure to include your website where you can.

You don’t need to be active in all the above properties, just need to own them.

This will build you a set of foundational web properties and essentially show Google that you are a real business and not just a niche blog.

Other things to consider:

* Build a home page (will help build your brand)
* Build a Beginner’s Guide page instead of just a category
* At the bottom of your posts, have a list of 3 additional posts with links to them that your reader may want to check out.

Good luck.

Thank you very much Jay.

Just to clarify - my wife is the Pinterest Guru (lol - Side note: I saw you made those changes to your Pinterest account. When you get a chance PM if they were helpful).

Okay, so Diane said some pretty good stuff, and I don't really want to repeat what anyone else is saying (or going to say)... So, well, I'm going to take a different approach to this:

KEEP PUSHING ON.

I get that you want to make sure that you are doing everything perfect, but if you believe that you are, then just keep pushing on. You're still only 3 months in.

Come up with a game plan for the next 9 months, and then, at year one, come back and see where you are and game plan what to do.

I'm not knocking on you wanting to make sure you are doing everything you can to succeed. However, as you are aware, everyone goes through the 3 month hump, where they get discourage, feel nothing is working out, and then usually fizzle out over the next few months, and end up leaving.

That's why I'm recommending to come up with a 1 year game plan. Don't focus on anything other than just doing what you're doing already - watch the training here, implement what you can, and continue grinding out content.

I could probably guarantee that if you ask three different people what's going on, each one is going to respond differently, because, honestly, your site is so young, and Google is acting wonky, and well, we just don't know. We can give a good guess, but can't really give you accurate answers.

The only answer is what is always preached. If you are doing what Google asks, then you will always succeed - you may get hit for a year or two, but as Google pushes info out, as long as you follow it, you'll gain those rankings again.

Something else that I sort of notice in your post is that part of the reason you are getting down on yourself, is because you aren't ranking in Google.

But what about Pinterest?

What about Bing?

What About Quora?

Why do you (and others) feel like they're failing if they don't rank well in Google? My wife and I are making a big push to almost focus entirely on ranking on Pinterest, and if any of our content ranks on Google, then great! But if not, we're cool with that too.

There is no reason to feel as though Google is the only search engine out there that you NEED to rely on for your traffic.

So I personally would recommend just seeing what you're doing well with Pinterest and Bing and capitalize on that. Chances are, if you focus on those two, over time, you'll get ranked for Google as well.

Last thing I would say is to see if you can track where your traffic is coming from and why it isn't going to any of your product review pages.

The reason you want to do this is because, at the end of the day, you can rank well for Google, Bing and Pinterest, but if you're not getting anyone to click through your affiliate links (i.e. you can't sell anything), then it doesn't really matter (yes, I know, you can make a TON of money with ad revenue, but let's just ignore that for right now).

I actualy just took a pause right now to look at your site, and came across what I was sort of talking about (screenshot 1):

First off, the button isn't engaging/click-baity (for lack of a better phrase). Something better (sort of writing off the fly after quickly reading that article): "Learn more about the 3 Phases Of A Chess Game From An International Master Here". (To be fair, it's really long, but do you get the point? Action (click), click-able title (have a number in it, and they're going to learn from someone who has cred i.e. GothamChess))

Additionally, remove "if you are interested", if you are trying to get someone to do something on your site - you are the chess authority, and they came to your site to learn something about chess. So act the part. Tell your audience that this is what they need to check out because it's going to help them win better at chess. "Knowing each phase, and how to attack or defend within it, is crucial to winning any chess game. Grab my guide below to learn the 5 key elements of each phase to win your next chess game".

Again, I'm sort of just spewing whatever comes immediately, but I think you see my point. Have a very active voice when it comes to recommending different things you have on your site.

(I would also split test those later on and see if you get more clicks with a button or just by internally linking it into your text).

Anyways, just a few of my thoughts. Hopefully they make sense.

Thank you very much Andy. Always appreciate your advice.

On Bing, I'm ranking #1 for a few keywords and I'm quite happy with that, but the potential from Bing is nowhere near that from Google. That's why I'm actively trying to rectify the Google situation.

Pinterest may indeed be a standalone traffic source, but I honestly don't think that applies to my niche. I currently think of it as a supporting source but I'll keep pushing and learning from you and others and who knows, maybe I'll be surprised with the results.

Your tips regarding the active voice and engagement do make sense, and I'll definitely keep them in mind.

Thanks again.

Hi Yusuf

Pinterest is predominantly female. I’m certainly not saying that females don’t play chess, but the things that seem to do the best are arts and crafts, entertainment, indoor decorating, etc.

You can certainly drive traffic to your chess site on Pinterest but I would find out which social channel are most interested in Chess and concentrate on that.

Ask AI and do your own research.

I’m in the same situation with my guitar blog. Most of my traffic is on Quora, Reddit, FB, and X, but I find Pinterest very easy to automate. 😎

Frank 🎸

Hey Frank (and Yusuf),

While Pinterest is largely female, around 17% of users are male. According to the latest statistics, there was (in Q3 2023) an average monthly users of 482 million users. If you do the math, that makes it out to over 81 million males searching stuff on Pinterest.

Sure, not all of them are going to be searching for chess theme info, but that is definitely a high enough number to get a good traffic flow to your site.

And that is only talking about men - chess has been on the rise for the past few years, as well as many chess IM/GM women (continuing to) advocating for more females to play chess. So there are plenty of women also looking into chess currently.

Also, (just to quibble) saying that some things do the best on Pinterest is like looking at Google's top searched keywords, and saying that those topics 'do the best', and you can't really rank for anything else.

Sure Pinterest is a visual search engine, and so it is different than Google, but it's a search engine none-the-less.

I personally think that there is a lot of untapped potential (both in the chess and guitar world) on Pinterest. You might need to tweak what you're writing about, and how you pin, but there is definitely potential.

I agree, look into the best place to target to get the best 'bang for your buck', but at the same time, if a platform is working over another one, utilize it to it's full potential.

Yusuf, you're Pinterest account has grown significantly over the course of a month - most things have jumped by over 200%. You've received at least 16 clicks from over 54 pins (from what I counted). I personally would continue with Pinterest, since there is a lot of untapped potential there.

But, as Frank mentioned, do your own research.

P.S. As I'm typing this, my wife is actually looking into it, and showing me how someone would be able to rank well for keywords around chess (For example, she just told me "Luxury Chess Sets" is a ranking keyword - write an article on that, throw the word "best" in front of it on your pin title, and it's "easy money" [her words, not mine], since the majority of people are on Pinterest to shop). Obviously it's not as straightforward as that, but the point is that there are plenty of ways to get traffic and make money on Pinterest.

2

Hey Frank,

Not sure where your other comment went about how to check keywords on Pinterest, but I'll answer it here regardless:

While we'll use the insights of Pinterest Trends occasionally to see what is, well, trending, and what general ideas we should try to target in the future, a lot of our keyword research is just searching the site and seeing what comes up.

It's pretty much the same as doing manual Google Keyword research - pop your browser in incognito mode, and then use the URL below (if you go straight to Pinterest, it tries to make you log in).
https://www.pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=guitar&rs=typed

Then just search around for what you're looking for and find relevant long-tail keywords. For example, if you look at Screenshot 1, you'll notice that there are quite a few longtail keywords around "Guitar Chords".

Also, if you search all pins inside your account, you can also see what Pinterest recommends right at the top (screenshot 2). Just be aware that can be geared towards you a little more, which is why you want to be incognito.

And last but not least, you can also search around in the Pinterest search results (I had to search around a little to actually find this) to locate the "Related Searches" (screenshot 3), for more keywords to target.

Hopefully this was helpful in some way. Feel free to drop me a PM, and my wife or I can take a look at your Pinterest account and give you feedback if you want.

1

Thanks, Andy - Super appreciated!

It would be great if you could give me feedback on my Pinterest account! I'll PM you the link.

Frank 🎸

I read your site. I am not a chess person. It's not my area of expertise because I always am the loser. Checkmate every time! I am someone who knows nothing about the topic. I left because I am not the right target audience for you.

Eric Cantu also has a chess site too. You should consult with him. He is a great teacher and mentor.

However, I encourage you to follow ParthaB's method—from his men's exercise site. I would have done shorter sentences in one line each. I see you do that. For me, longer sentences are an issue regarding readability.

You got plenty of suggestions and advice from other members. I am not there yet regarding my traffic. One thing I noticed from Pinterest: yes, they bring traffic to your site. But it does not guarantee you will get affiliate sales.

Doing your website articles organically takes a long time. Another alternative is pre-paid click ads (PPC) if you want a faster way. It's a gamble. Or monetize your site with ads.

I am not an expert. My Pinterest experience is limited because I just started it a month ago. I notice that they look at the pins themselves, not my links. I am going to give this some more time, but I am still skeptical that it generate any sales for me.

Jay did say in one of his classes that these people are not "hot" buyers. You are just leading them to your blog post; that is it. Just as Diane said, "It doesn't mean they read it either." I agree. They look at pins only; that's my experience. I know it is too soon to jump to conclusions, but that's how I feel about it.

So, the other alternative is to focus on other social media sites where people stay on the platform. The hottest ones are Facebook and many others. I know someone here using just Facebook PPC ads with a landing page. He has generated a lot of sales that way.

3

Thanks for the tips Brenda.

I'll talk to Eric and see if he's got any pointers for me.

Regarding PPC ads, I think it's way too early for me to invest anything other than my WA membership — I need to see at least some potential before I consider spending any money.

Ads on my site I'll definitely consider once I get at least some traffic. My current problem is lack of impressions, let alone traffic.

I may need to consider Facebook at some point.

Thanks again.

Hi Yuzuf,
I am still very new myself so don't have the technical knowledge to help you at all, but my site is about the same age as yours so i thought i would share what i have experienced in case it sheds any light.
I have only created 19 posts that have been indexed so i am way behind you but have approx 9,500 impressions in the same time with a CTR of 1.7 so it looks like my site is starting to gain traction. But, when i look into it almost 3,000 of these impressions and 66% of all clicks are for 1 post. This post regularly ranks in 5th place on google and seems to drive all my traffic. A lot of the other posts were in my opinion better posts with good content and keywords but don't rank at all...Apologies if this is a silly suggestion but from what i have seen I would try picking some keywords with really high chances of ranking even if low traffic to see if this has any impact. I hope you find an answer to help and i look forward to seeing your site start taking off
Pete

2

No, it's not a silly suggestion, I'll take all I can get.

Thanks a lot Pete. I appreciate your input.
