Hey guys i'm just wondering if it is actually necessary to backup my WordPress site because I want to continue to update without risking losing all my data. Doesn't WA host all the

The advice here is super. If it helps I went through Welshy's training on the back ups which now works automatically for me each week. I then went on and did the WP upgrade, successfully.

Hudson.

Yeah I have mine up and runnin autopilot too. We are now one step closer to expertise :)

I just did a test restore. Is that bad? Cuz now I think there are two copies of the same site on root folder. Would that take up too much space? and is there a limit on the space I can use on wp? And if I copied an SQL file from a different site into the folder to restore that would probably mess up my site. If so how would I access those folders to delete and modify. These questions have become hypothetical questions but as i'm learning how to restore these questions bug me lol anybody know the answers to these unique questions?

When it comes to space, your site is likely not taking up much space, but I wouldn't suggest having two copies of the site as that is just clutter and it means that the next time you go to back things up you might be backing up the extra copy too.

Currently we do not offer direct access to databases so you would not use the SQL backup, you would install a new wordpress site and import the wordpress XML. That's the most simple way to do this.

OK I just went to tabs then tools then import and went to WordPress import page. Got that figured out now. So should I create a new website now that I have an extra copy of my website downloaded in the root folder? It's a brand new website so I wouldn't have a problem redoing it. It's just I really don't wanna have a duplicate copy of my site cluttering up space.

Ok I know how to backup my WP site now from the training Carson provided me, but there's one more thing. How would I take the backup zip document to WordPress and restore my site? There's gotta be an option to upload and restore on WordPress, but I just can't seem to find it.

Here is the official docs for the BackWPup plugin.
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/backwpup/

What BackWPup does is creates an export of your Database and backs up all your files.

To restore the stie you could do it a number of ways. One way would be to use the Wordpress XML backup file it creates and simply import it. You also have all of your files backed up that you could easily restore via FTP. The ZIP that you get will have all of the data that you need according to the official plugin page added above.

Cheers,

Carson

Updating is good as updates often address security fixes but make sure you have a good backup first.

You need to keep your WP updated. Make sure you keep a backup of your website before you do any updates. Sometimes plugins will break because they are not up to date. This is why you need to keep a backup of your site. But you need to have a back up of your site periodically anyhow.

Here is training on backing up your entire site provided by Welshy (Craig).

This training is found under the "Video" tab here in the "Everything Wordpress" classroom.

Yes, you should regularly back up your website so that you have copies of all your settings and Data.

At WA, we host your content and back it up for you but this does not mean you are invincible to data loss.

Here's why:

1 - At any give time we have your data on more than one server. If server A catches on fire, then server B will continue to server your data. This offers redundancy in case of a server issue.

2 - We also take snapshots of your data so that we can restore data to a certain point in time. This is NOT real time so there is potential for some data loss if we had to resort to reverting to a snapshot.

You want to do regular backups of your own data with all websites that you own, especially before doing an update to your core website files (wordpress update).

Hope this helps!

Carson

Oh, thx ! This is a great question, and such a practical response, Carson. I figured you have redundant servers, and i figured I need to do backups, but this is the first i have ever heard of you doing snapshots. Love it.

Thanks for the quick support Carson. :) I'm wondering, is there training for backing up all of my data and images?

Snapshots are not something that you should rely on as your only backup source. It's something that protects us from a catastrophe. These backups are not publicly available, so you really do want to keep your own backups that you can easily recall on at any time.

With this said, we do have plans to offer Premium members a "Click button" backup where you can literally backup your entire site with the click of a button, then download it to your own computer. This will be part of WA hosting in the future (no dates yet).

This is world class help. Because of this classroom i'm able to continue on my journey. I can't thank you guys enough and hope i'm a member for life.
