Does Art imitate Life, or is it the other way around?
Does art imitate life or does life imitate art? Artists, Musicians and Actors often depict different times in our lives or historical moments. Some fictitious and some not. This can and seem like movies, songs, or even portrayals are similar to what life presents us and the results of where they lead. Did you know that there are virtual tours of some museums that one can observe or listen to these works?
There are countless movies, films, shows and artistically images that indicate that what the author tries to do is send a message of some sort describing or explaining events as they happened or could happen.
Some of these are written very well and some, are not, depending on what ever resources are available. For the most part they are entertaining enough to draw our attention and brings us as the audience into the world they are describing. Some artists that come to mind are,
- Michelangelo and his paintings.
- Beethoven and his 5th Symphony.
- Steven Spielberg movies such as Jaws.
Each one of these artists depict and present different stories that happen, sound like, or keep us entertained to the point that we begin to wonder if these elements are actual or fictitious. This often crosses my mind when I am watching or listening to these activities.
What are your thoughts? Does Art imitate life, or life imitates Art?

To me, artists give their view of certain aspects of life. Different artists have different ways of portraying their views, for example the different styles of Picasso and Monet. Both are masters of representation, but in completely different ways. Best Alan
Thanks Alan. It really is up to the artist that defines the part or artwork and makes it their own. Very cool interpretation. There are countless methods of different works that present themselves in their own unique way. Thanks again Alan.
Art imitates life. It depicts our thoughts, our traditions, our mores, and very closely related to the level of development of the society in which the artist lives. In the early stages of social development art usually depicts directly how people live at that time. As social development becomes more sophisticated or advanced - the industrial revolution, the current technological revolution - abstraction creeps into art to reflect the complexity of these societies. That is why, currently it isn’t as clear whether art imitates life or the other way around.
A wonderful post. I love it!

Very true. Great observance and I am glad that your comments address this question. Many thanks.
I think your question reminds me of another question: "Which came first, the chicken, or the egg?" :)
While Art is Independent of Real Life as an expression, it no doubt borrows from our collected experience and references...
A relative quote that perhaps best describes this very
relationship, Anias Nin Author /Essayist from the 40's
"We see people not as they are, but as we are"
So translated for our point:
" We visualize/express, Life and Art, As we are".
That said,
" No one can deny that their is an Art to Living'
***First time I have seen this profile shot of you Xavier...it
is indeed captivating....and could be considered Art.

My Respect to you and your loved ones...sincerely, David
Thank you David for your kind words. What a world we live in. Incredibly wonderful and yet how much do we really know about our existence. Take care.
I feel there is an interrelationship because we are inspired by art forms which inspires us to deliberately create art forms!
It may require some more careful thinking but is definitely something I do not usually thinking about.
Thank you very much for the encouragement to think outside the box!

No...I believe "Jaws" is a movie about a fictitious shark. I think Xavier was referring to Steven Spielberg (as a modern day example of artistic genius) in reference to these other notables...at least that is what I read.

I believe that it's a giant circle. Art imitates life and then life comes along and imitates art. There is no beginning or end, just one giant loop.
Thank you for this post. It definitely makes one think.
Take care.
