Help! i'm freaking out!

Last Update: July 28, 2014

Oh mannnnnnnnnnn, I'm really freaking out right now, I've started building my 1st website in bootcamp and I was doing some research on google and found my WEBSITE listed. I'm completely wigged out over it because I thought it would not be on the internet until I okayed it to be listed or something like that! I wanted to finish it before people could see it, or at least get it to a presentable stage! But what is really freaking me out the most is that someone else has written a description under the website name in the google search results to describe what the website is about and I DID NOT WRITE IT! It sounds ok, but I did not write it. What can I or should I do about this situation, any and all comments will be greatly appreciated, my heart is pounding away right now worrying about this! HELP!

UPDATE: OK, my pounding heart has slowed down considerably now, with the help of my friends below, thank you guys and gals, my panic is abated for now! Shewww, that was kind of like my first bowkill on a whitetail deer. Except I was younger and in better shape then! I never dreamed having my own website would lead to a reaction like this, WOW!

Jack I honestly wouldn't stress about this. I know it's scary putting yourself out there, but I wouldn't discourage the search engines from finding your site. You WANT your content out there in Google so people can find it, otherwise what's the point?

Realize now that your website will NEVER be "perfect" or "finished" .. it'll always be a work in progress. I wouldn't wait til you think it's "acceptable for people to see" because you may always find some excuse to keep hiding it!

As for the meta description.. Google will pull bits and pieces together from your site to make its own, could that be what happened?

Hi Wendy,
The shock and awe is done for now, lol, but I guess I am old fashioned in that since I have no content on the site except a privacy policy and about me page, I didn't feel it should be seen.

Who wants to click on an empty website, after all? As for the meta, I am sure from what others have posted that Google came up with the description of the site. That is a whole other scary subject, how they nailed down a fairly accurate description of a website with no content, just a title, very bizarre!

Anyway, I appreciate your input as always and happy Sunday to you!

Jack :)

Jack if all you have on your site is a privacy policy and an about me page, it really shouldn't be showing up in search engines to anybody.

If may be showing up within your personal results, but if you did the same search result queries within an incognito window or private browser your site probably wouldn't show up at all!

Hi Jack,
I'm glad to see you're not freaking out anymore! Kinda like a roller coaster ride, scary and fun all at the same time!

I wouldn't worry too much about people seeing it before it's completed...there's no such thing as finishing a website anyways since there's always more content to add, things to tweak, etc. At least that's my opinion.

Hang in there and enjoy the ride! Best wishes :)

Hey Sherry,
Greetings & Salutations from Bluegrass Country! Panic is a very strange bedfellow, it shows up when you least expect it, for no good reason at all, and leaves you shaking & quaking in your boots like a newborn pup pushed out of the litters ring of warmth!

But yes, things should be better from now on, getting that first rush of fear out of the way! God Bless!

Jack. :)

It sure does show up when you least expect it, lol. You should've seen me a little while ago, in a panic since my mouse and keyboard stopped working at all...what to do!!! Oh, was I getting frustrated! Anyways, somehow got it working again...then the computer wouldn't boot up properly, no login screen to be had! After trying several times I finally got it back to normal....Whew! haha, talk about shaking & quaking in my boots :)

I remember our first website, got it all ready and then couldn't figure how to get it online.Asked around and was told that it was already was and had been since we published our first changes to our template lol
We were a bit freaked too, but at least we were spared the knowledge that it was online while we were building it. I feel for you...it's all good though probably at the stage it is at only a few people will see it. so not to worry.. In the training Kyle mentions to publish things as you go along.

You do make a good point of not many people seeing it and Kyle did say to publish each page as you write it. I did not publish my about me page yet because I wasn't sure I was done with it yet so I kept it in private mode for now. The only thing published is the privacy policy, lol!

Hi, I hope you've managed to fix it, I'm also hiding one of mine at the moment, while reconstructing it. Pro2100 has a good advise, aside from dch1959.

As soon as your site is published it is on the big wide web and search engines can find it. Google will make up there own description base on what the find on the site and any meta tags you may have placed on the site.

Ok, is there anyway to hide it out until I want it out there, or is that a ridiculous question, I'm pretty naïve about this business? I really appreciate your quick response, Russell. Thank You!
Jack :)

Instead of clicking publish, click on save draft when you are writing or working on your site. It will not be made public until you click publish. The post or page you have published is out there now and you can't bring it back.

No doubt about it, I had no clue about discouraging the search engines from indexing your website, great information to know, now whether they honor it is another matter!
