"Relationships will either make you or break you"

I came across this four-letter acronym when I was a Sunday school teacher and a trainer in the past 15 years. While reading through my notes, I just came to figure out some most common ideas when it comes to relationships.

I practiced this four-letter word LESS principle and further developed it to be FATLESS and REAL FATLESS Lifestyle. These are all values that are driving my life and which propelled me also in my career. So, how can you do LESS and get more out of your relationships?

Intentional

The first step to building anything is to define your intention. Relationships like any other business endeavor require you to be intentional. It is so amazing how people become successful in their various careers and businesses, yet they fail in relationships.

Napoleon Hill, in his book "Think and Grow Rich", talks about the desire to be rich as one of the key driving factors to being successful.

Clarity creates competence.

When you don't know what you want in a relationship, maybe find out what you don't want in a relationship.

Awareness and being intentional is the starting point towards building a relationship.

Treat your relationship like a business and make it your business.

Once this step is sorted out, then you can learn how to do LESS

Love

Here are some 10 best love songs which narrates more about love:

  1. “I Want to Know What Love Is”—Foreigner
  2. “Love Yourself”—Justin Bieber
  3. “Drunk in Love”—Beyonce featuring Jay-Z
  4. “I Love Me”—Demi Lovato
  5. "Stupid Love”—Lady Gaga
  6. “All You Need is Love”—The Beatles
  7. “I Will Always Love You”—Whitney Houston
  8. “Can’t Help Falling In Love”—Elvis Presley
  9. “The Only Way to Love”—Vanessa Carlton
  10. “Love Yourself”—Justin Bieber

Love, like, or "in love" are some words we use apart from some slang words. Despite our choice of words, love is an emotional experience based on our perception.

Love is the other key to being successful in whatever you want to build. Many movies, poems, songs, and books have been written about romantic love and relationships.

Dr. Garry Chapman wrote a book called "The 5 Love Languages" which became a best-seller in some countries. The book sheds some light on how we want to experience love or gesture love.

What does love really mean or what is love?

After reading so many books and listening to so many lectures and sermons, it no longer matters what it really means. I am the one who knows what it means to me. I have crafted my own meaning and believe any mature human being must do so.

A lot of people may struggle to articulate what they want in a relationship but they easily know what irritates them in a relationship. And love is to do that which you want others to do to you or not to do to others what you would not like them to do unto you.

Love to me means...... (complete six sentences)

Encourage

Cambridge dictionary definition:

"to make someone more likely to do something, or to make something more likely to happen"

"to talk or behave in a way that gives someone confidence to do something"

To cheer, being a cheerleader. Just like the famous song by OMI - Cheerleader (Felix Jaehn Remix) lyrics

When I need motivation
My one solution is my queen
'Cause she stays strong (yeah yeah)
She is always in my corner
Right there when I want her
All these other girls are tempting
But I'm empty when you're gone
And they say

To uplift - to lift someone up

To inspire (latin-inspirare)- meaning to blow into or breathe life into, to influence, to guide from your spirit.

I feel encouraged when .......

Encourage is a verb that means it can be experienced through actions.

"This is how we know what love is:

Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.

And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers."

"Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue only, but with actions and in truth"

-1 John 3v16,18- Holy Bible

This would mean we should express our love in encouraging words and corresponding actions.

Barry White famous song, "Practice what you preach"

What you appreciate appreciates

Serve

We are living in the times of Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, where everyone wants to be famous and great. We see a lot of people faking their looks and mimicking Hollywood, Bollywood, and other great celebrities.

First Nationa Bank (FNB) of South Africa had a motto "How can we help you"

Post Office South Africa has a motto, "Noma kanjani" which can be translated as "We deliver, Whatever it takes"

MacDonald's Slogan, "I'm Lovin' it" has cost them more than $1.37 Billion dollars but they have a turnover of $4.73 Billion just in 2020 which was a decline from their 2019 turnover of over $6 Billion. Do we love MacDonalds or do we love their service?

These slogans are service values that drive businesses. However, you will notice that the Post Office of South Africa provides one of the worst services.

Service is an emotional feeling such as a smile, satisfaction, happiness, or anger. Service is evaluated on the basis of reliability, responsiveness, and high quality.

Serving others is hard and that is why it requires to be intentional.

Every day, I wake and think about how I can be a service to my family, colleagues, and any person I meet on the street. I have realized that I feel happier when I do good. As such, the good I am doing is not for others but unto myself.

Simple acts like making coffee for my wife or preparing her things while she is sleeping go a long way.

All great companies in the world are known for the great service they provide.

If you want to be great, then serving is the way.

Support

As I have already mentioned about being intentional in building a relationship, support is very crucial. My English dictionary defines support as carrying all the weight or part of it or giving assistance to especially financially.

Support is a thing that bears the weight or keeps something upright. Providing support to someone you love would mean learning the art of bearing their weight and at times keeping them upright.

Henry Ford is quoted saying

"Coming together is a beginning

Working together is progress

Staying together is success"

Providing support is only possible if you are present and paying attention to your relationships.

I thought this would be doing LESS but it is doing i-LESS.

The i.L.E.S.S Principles simplified as

#Intentional

#Love

#Encourage

#Serve

#Support
