So you are a kid and you have big dreams as most kids do right? One day your Dad asks, “What do you want to do when you grow up?” You tell him you want to build a spaceship and go to Mars, as your Father politely laughs and say no I am serious. You laugh back and say I don’t know I am only 10 years old. Little does Dad know he is smashing your dreams like most helpful family and friends do. Now these people may have your best interests at heart but they don’t understand what they are doing to your mind. Every man made thing we see was someone’s imagination before it was made.

Genius or Nuts

So everyone knows Thomas Edison was given credit for inventing the light bulb. I wonder how many times his family and friends told him “you are nuts you will never replace a candle for light”? Do you think people laughed at Steve Wozniak when he was building the first typewriter\calculator combination? Are you are reading this on your own computer? Do you know that Ignaz Semmelweis was ridiculed for telling medical students and doctors that people were dying because the doctors and students were not washing their hands between patients? In fact, he was eventually tossed into an insane asylum where he died. Today we would think that is just crazy right? My point being just because people tell you it is impossible, or that is a crazy idea it will never work doesn’t make them right, it also doesn’t mean they are trying to hold you back, but they just cannot see what you see. If the people in your life are telling you how to live your life, you have options. One you can say “thank you for your opinion” and then start working on your goals anyway, or you can quit. Which one do you think will make you feel better about yourself? Which solution shows you have faith in yourself?

Make it Happen

When I was in my early 40’s I decided I would like to finish college, of course, my friends said “you have been out of school to long, it will take you forever with working, the kids and everything else you have going. Well within seven years I had an AS in accounting and a BS in Computer Networking and Security. Odd combination I know but I didn’t know what I wanted to be when I grew up. Of course, my beautiful wife Michelle had my back all the way, she never doubted me. Today my Son is attending Champlain College just has I had, and yes he is following his dream, I never once told him to try for something more profitable, or that will not work. My Daughter is different than my Son she is still searching for her passion none the less I am very proud of her. She attends college part-time and at 19 years old is a shift manager at a restaurant near home. I have no doubt she will be highly successful in any endeavor she takes on. There is an old Chinese proverb “never be afraid of moving forward slowly, only be afraid of standing still”. So what will you do with your dreams, let someone talk you out of them, or make them become reality? The greatness is within you all you have to do is try.
