How does one accept credit card payments on a website?

I need to be able to accept international payments via credit/debit/cheque cards.
I am living in South Africa and all of the plugins I've seen so far for WooCommerce are only helpful if you live in the USA, UK, Australia, etc.
I read online somewhere that you have to have a merchant bank account.I'm not quite sure what that is and was wondering if it is absolutely neccessary to have one? It's just one ebook that will be sold, that's why I'm hoping there is perhaps an easy and straight forward way to go about this?
