Stop Spammers with a Custom Comment Blacklist in Wordpress

Hi,

I usually stick a comment blacklist into my websites and social media pages to stop people from commenting about inappropriate things on the site. A custom comment blacklist would block words such as:

  • graphic terminology for body parts and reproduction (I really don't want to read this!!)
  • curse words
  • drugs spammers like to advertise
  • abbreviations for stuff I'm not even sure what it is!

Since I am still working on my most recent website I looked up the list and found an extensive one here.

WARNING Don't look at the list if you are easily offended. This is stuff you DON'T want to see. Kind of the point here...

Here's what you do to stop words from the list from ending up on your WordPress website.

1. Log into WordPress and click on "Settings".

2. Click on "Discussion" (Its Under Settings)

3. Scroll down the page until you see "Comment Moderation".

4. Copy all the bad words from the page in the link above and paste into the white box under comment moderation.

5. Scroll Down more until you see the "Save Changes" button.

6. Save changes.

You are done! Comments with inappropriate terms will not be on your page. You could also place the list in the comment blacklist box and you will never see them at all. The problem with that is some of the words may be appropriate for some of your websites. For example, words that are often used in spam might be part of a keyword for a legitimate niche topic: Examples are:

  • loan
  • debt
  • dating
  • rental
  • insurance

So you will need to read the list to figure out what is actually appropriate in your niche and delete those words from the list.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for the share :)

Thanks Vynette !!!!

Can we also block the unauthorized new users?

Hi Paul,

Did you mean someone you set up as a user in your Wordpress site? If so, here's a video.. http://www.wpbeginner.com/plugins/how-to-block-a-wordpress-user-without-deleting-their-account/

If not, did you mean someone who is commenting on your posts?

I got three emails from Word Press that new user has registered but I deleted them. I did not authorize them and I do not have my commentors to register before making comments so I thought they were spammers.

If you didn't approve them, are they on your users list in Wordpress? If so, you can delete them.
I am uncertain what WA is using for Wordpress security. If you are hosting elsewhere, You should have askimet and word fence installed to block attacks. Also a very strong password.
For passwords I use a random password generator (I just google to find one) to create the password then write it down. It makes guessing a password statistically unlikely.

Yes Vynette!...they were in my Word Press back office and I deleted them. But I think I am fine for now. Thanks for your input.

Great stuff. Thanks, dear
