When people talk about the “comfort zone” they talk as if it is something alien. It’s a place where most of us go to in order to avoid something they are not used to doing or going and may be afraid of changing. It's a place we can go to avoid change.

Some wonder what’s so bad about staying in your comfort zone. Others ask, ‘why is it good to step out your comfort zone.’ Within this article, I hope to provide you with some clear reason why you should break out your comfort zone.

The reason we don’t leave that comfort zone is that it is a safe place for us, but playing it safe all the time can keep us stagnant; not growing. Staying in our comfort zones results in complacency.

At times it’s alright to be in your safe place because there are times when we will need to feel calm and surrounded with what is familiar to us. However, to always be in that safe place quashes our need to know things and our desire to experience new and different things.

We need to grow in life and expand new horizons. We can’t do that by staying on the inside of our comfort zone. You can gain insight into new things when you allow yourself to leave your comfort zone. Here I will show you what my take is regarding your comfort zone.

Always Learning Something New

Whenever you are learning, you are also growing. We have all heard this expression:

Whatever you are searching for you, you won’t find it in your safe place. Leaving that place is the only way you will learn something different and new. You will move toward seeing places you’ve never seen before, meet new people you’ve never met before, and learn how to do things you’ve never done before.

Even better than all of those things I’ve just mentioned, you will find your true self. You will find that you are a better person than you ever were before.

Learn Who You Are

Discover who you are and take some risks that will help you grow as a person. By taking risks and doing things you have never done before will tell you things about yourself as you find new interests, what your passions are, and what your weaknesses and strengths are.

As you begin to achieve things you never thought you could do, it will improve your confidence, grown in your knowledge and you will realize that you have more skills than you ever thought you had.

Stop Looking Through Rose Colored Glasses

Being in your comfort zone feels good and safe because it is where you are most comfortable, and it’s a place you know well. However, going to places unfamiliar can feel just as safe once you’re there.

Don’t let being in your comfort zone only show you’re the world behind rose-colored glasses. Don’t make believe that you don’t have any fears or worries about the uncertainty you will feel if you were to leave your comfort zone.

Exploring new territories will let you see things differently. It will allow you to handle changes more readily and it will be more trouble-free.

When you leave your comfort zone, you are taking a risk that you will control, even though you may feel the hesitation in your actions to do so. But, making this move on your own accord will help you be able to handle whatever obstacles life puts in your path.

We Learn to Handle Change

If we live long enough, there is no doubt that change that we may not be comfortable with will come around. If we are willing to leave our safe place, we will learn how to handle the change.

Taking the opportunity to leave our comfort zones every chance we get teaches us how to be accepting of change so that when it comes at us, we are ready and able to deal with them appropriately.

Conquer Your Fears

The place outside of our comfort zone is in effect an unfamiliar place and taking this risk can be more than a little scary to most of us. However, many times the fear is more in our heads than anything.

Try this with me. Think about something that you did that frightened you? It doesn’t matter what it was, just that it scared you. Next, think about how you felt after whatever happened was all over.

Did you think it was silly or stupid for you to be so afraid? You were probably delighted and maybe even felt a little ridiculous for being scared.

When you do something that is outside of your comfort zone, you come to learn and understand that there wasn’t anything of which to be frightened. In time, you will see that it is the fear itself that is stopping you from leaving the safety of your comfort zone. What is outside of your comfort zone is nothing to fear.

Comfort Ruins Productivity

It’s very easy for folks to use the excuse of being busy as a reason to stay in their safe place. This excuse is their justification to avoid new challenges and experiences. What they don’t get is that staying in that familiar place of comfort will to damage to their productivity.

Coping with unrealistic expectations and last-minute due dates will bring about some discomfort, but seems to promote more productivity. When folks are doing a balancing act, they seem to be more ambitious. Learning to push our boundaries puts us on track to work smarter, allowing us to reach our pace much quicker.

Find Your Tank of Inner Strength

During our lifetime, we will all come across a time when it will be very necessary for each of us to feel uncomfortable. Many people are very surprised at how they can handle something they never had to do before.

When pulled into situations that we are not accustomed to, we find out quite a bit about the kind of person we are or can be. We discover that we are stronger than we think and have way more ability than we ever thought.

Therefore, it will turn us forward to new and exciting ventures in the future.

Conclusion

Some people are willing to try just about anything and don’t concern themselves with a comfort zone. However, leaving your comfort zone can be frightening for a lot of people.

Staying in your safe place keeps you from growing and experiencing all life has to offer. We need to be able to face obstacles that arise and not avoid them because they are unfamiliar to us. We should learn to broaden our horizons and meet challenges head-on.

There is nothing to fear but fear itself. So, give it a try. Close the door to your comfort zone and lock it up because you don’t need it. Get the most out of your personal life or your business life. Staying stuck in your little safe place will cause you to miss many good things in your personal life and stifle your business.

Try to experience new activities and new places that you have never experienced. Maybe try something different in your business that you have wanted to try, but have been afraid to make it happen.

For those who may have been wondering ‘why is it good to step out your comfort zone,’ I hope I was able to provide some important reasons that answer that question for you.

Don't stay trapped in your comfort zone. Begin a good new habit and try something new each week personally and in your business.

After you have done that, come on back and tell me how it all went. It will surprise you, I’m sure.

Thanks very much friend for following! Be blessed!

You're welcome.

This time of year is a very big struggle because I'm pretty much forced to get out of my comfort zone. I've never been a fan of the 4th of July (Don't misunderstand me, I do enjoy celebrating the Independence of the US) because I greatly fear fireworks. I cannot stand the noise and it seems like it gets louder and louder every year.

At WA though, we have to get out of our comfort zones because that is how we'll succeed. I need to get out of my comfort zones more often.

I don't particularly enjoy them either. Mainly because people are still doing them late at night in the neighborhood. The noise is very annoying at night.

WA definitely can move you out of your comfort zone because we have to do things that we are just learning and haven't done before and some of our members are literally starting from ground zero with no prior knowledge of the internet, social media and the likes. So. this is a great place to learn new things and to expand new horizons!

Thanks so much for your comments.

Great post. Thank you!

Thanks, Gracie. I hoped it inspired you to do something different that you may have been uncomfortable to do before.

Thanks again! It actually got me thinking outside the box!

Good post, which a lot will relate to. Personally I don't have the words comfort zone in my dictionary anymore.

Hi, Dave,

Many times I think I write articles for myself as well as others! There are definitely things I try to avoid in business, but I am working on not going to my safe place to avoid moving forward with them.

Glad you have been able to make a break from your comfort zone. Remember, that there are times when we need to be in that place for a short while because we can calm our emotions there.

Thanks for responding. I certainly appreciate your time.

Verna I fully get where you are coming from, great post

Thank you. Have a great day Dave!

Thank you for your excellent blog post-Verna, I hear you 100%, we need to come out of their comfort zone and step up our game!

Enjoy your day and all the best you.

Roy

You are right Roy. When we step up our game, leaving our comfort zone behind sort happens without us even thinking about it.

Thanks for our comments.

At 77 years of age, I still have 23 years of learning to go.
Tom.

Tom, I'm with you on that one! I enjoy learning and try to learn something new each day. I believe that learning is a process that is or should be ongoing throughout our lifetime.

Thanks for your comments.

Great article, V. Sometimes we ALL need gentle reminders. Thanks.
M

Thanks, Michelle.

I think that if we keep giving ourselves that "gentle reminder" I believe we will get closer and closer to not going to that safe place just because we are afraid to try new things. Avoidance isn't the answer, especially in business.

Thanks for your time and I appreciate your comments.
