How to move a Weebly site to Wordpress in WA. This was going to be my title for a tutorial after I moved a large, aged site of mine from Weebly to WA. Until I realized that I didn't read the description thouroughly and it didn't import any of my pictures.

I installed WordPress Importer. Here is what it does...

The WordPress Importer will import the following content from a WordPress export file:

  • Posts, pages and other custom post types
  • Comments
  • Custom fields and post meta
  • Categories, tags and terms from custom taxonomies
  • Authors

The quickest method for installing the importer is:

  1. Visit Tools -> Import in the WordPress dashboard
  2. Click on the WordPress link in the list of importers
  3. Click “Install Now”
  4. Finally click “Activate Plugin & Run Importer”

==> If you decide to use this - please be aware that you will have to reinstall your images!

I am fine with this, as I said it's probably 15 years or older and with image copyright laws the way they are now, I am not sure if all my images would pass. So for me, this is really a blessing.

I am getting ready to rearrange my menus and recreate my site properly.

Thanks a lot. This really helped me.

Thank you so much for talking about this; I am considering making the move from Weebly to WP/WA (hosting) myself.

Please be prepared, it's not going to look anything like the Weebly site. The reason that I did it with my site was that it was time for it to be 're-invented' and I didn't want to pay the Weebly fees for SSL or email, or everything else that the site needed in order to grow.

Exactly... that's the main thing I'm worried about, but I want to take the site to a "new level", have a regular domain without the .weebly, and integrate it as I learn Wordpress with any other WA sites I create here.

I'm thinking with enough work and the right theme, I can get it close to what it was, but it's risky. Might browse Wordpress themes before taking the plunge. I also don't want to pay for both weebly and WA at the same time, so might as well get it here and use Wordpress to eventually optimize it in the long term.

Again, thank you so much for this post and your reply -exactly the info I was looking for! :)

You're welcome and best of luck to you! Let me know how it goes!

How did you create a wordpress export file from the weebly site? I have tried the below but get an error message. May have to do it manually over the long term (I tried a bunch of other stuff already but nothing seems to work haha).

http://weeblytowp.com/ (didn't work for me)

Yes, that's exactly how I did it. Odd, what's your error message?

"Could not find any content in your weebly blog to export." Asked about it on their youtube video and they said it could be a problem on their end. (others in the comments of the video reported the same issue)

Oh, gosh. I'm sorry about that... maybe try again tomorrow.

I asked the Support here to move my Weebly site to WA, and they told me it could not be done because Weebly does not use WordPress. I guess they don't know everything! I wanted to keep my older site a bit longer so I had to extend my Weebly membership.

It's definitely not going to look like your old Weebly site... maybe that's what they meant?

I don't know, that was the answer I got from Support. No WordPress, No move was their answer to me.
