How would you monetize this old site?

Hi Guys, So i been lucky enough to be given a website focused on franchising,

www.franchisefinder.co.za people list their franchises for a monthly fee. The web site has been dormant for about 2 years with no work done but still ranks on pg 1 of google. its also straight HTML. no WP to help edit, I still need to contact all the listings to get them to start their monthly fee again if they wish too.

What other revenue streams could you suggest? A reviews section? Selling Business Services?

Traffic is averaging 200 new visitors a day, Goal would be to get that to 500. Also there is not social media on this site as yet, As mentioned it is old, but has good content which i believe has kept it ranking well.

Any suggestions or comments to help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Trevor

PS. The site has a sister site www.sa-conference-venues.co.za which i need to do the same with.

My first comment was about the first site you linked to... the second site (Which I opened at the same time) seems to be entirely blank.

I admit I honestly have no idea how to navigate that site, in the regard that I don't know what I should click on to figure out what the site is about. That being said, I'm obviously not your target customer (In that I wouldn't be typing the keywords to find what they're looking for), meaning I haven't necessarily been to other sites like it.

-All- of that said... you mentioned services. Why not offer your own service for business plan creation? Or, if you'd rather not put -that- much work into it... try affiliating with a company that does it fulltime in exchange for profits? Throw a link in the 'business plan' article.

In the 'business apps' area, you're advertising all sorts of sites and therefore products. Perhaps it's time -- with your level of traffic -- to start trying to communicate with offers -like- them that'll pay you for customers if you're not currently doing that.

So, for example, find something similar (As feature-rich and with a similar level of quality, or even much higher-quality) to SARS e-filing and have an affiliate link to it.

I do notice it focuses on smartphone apps, and there -are- ways to link to an app-creator's page where, if they download it, they'll give you a commission if they sell the app, or they'll pay per download if it's free. Consider looking into that kind of thing.

If you don't want to change the app lineup, no harm in asking them directly. In fact, link to that specific page and tell them what you've already done for them and where you plan to go with it (With or without them) and see how fast they jump at the opportunity. To prove it further, suggest that they go to Google and type in the keywords you're #1 on, and if nothing else worked, that probably will. You have -so much- leverage in that site. Use it.

I'd have a tough time believing the 'Sponsored Links' under the 'Search Via Category' area aren't monetized... if they aren't, you're giving them too much attention (That's one bright banner above their names) but let's assume that for some reason, the other links aren't. Why not?

And if you regularly find new franchises to offer, perhaps you can offer a mailing list and have emails sent out when new franchises get added or when certain franchises offer better details, change their offers, etc.

Including affiliate links in email (Or on the landing page of the link offered in the email) reminds people of a particular franchise they were looking into, and it increases your chances of getting something out of it if they go for it.

-Since- I haven't done much research on your particular field, I don't know what the process would be for affiliate links with franchises. That's... different, since I'd think it'd be more difficult to figure out who sent the franchisee when they set everything up.

I wouldn't recommend ads or anything of that nature for the simple fact it cheapens your site, and chances are high the relevance would be near-nonexistent. And I largely mean like AdSense or Bing Ads or ... things of that nature.

If a particular franchise is willing to pay you for conspicuous advertising on your site, why not? If you can make room and you'd be comfortable with it... offer it to them, for a price.

Monetization aside (Suggestions):
Instead of -only- allowing people to download the forms and send it in manually to the email address listed, why not add a link underneath allowing people to fill the form out directly on the site, which -automatically- sends the form to the email?

For new users, you might consider putting the 'Franchise Glossary' in a more prominent place where it's more likely to be noticed by someone who isn't necessarily familiar with what the site's about. Something to give them a clear understanding of what they just stepped into.

Perhaps instead of naming it 'Franchise Glossary' (Wherever you put it for a conspicuous view), perhaps link it as "what is a franchise?" or something equally-relevant. This allows people who've just stumbled across your site to jump straight to "what are you talking about?" -- And, maybe that's just me. Because again ... I obviously wasn't your target. ;)

Hi Gotenks. I've never had such a indepth review and feed back before. I appreciate the time taken to review the site and formulate your reply.

Each item you have listed is clear and makes sense. I think that everyone knows what a franchise is, but then again I'm wrong. I'll look at the navigation menu on the left. I'm slowly contacting all people that have adverts to get them to reductive or remove them.

The sponsored ads aren't paid. I suspect was added for more content at some stage. I would need to contact them.

I like the idea of the business services focusing on setting up franchises and will have a mailer going out in the next week or so.

I also went to a magazine stand and got the latest magazine advertising franchises and started contacting them to see. If they would like to list.

The site does need updating in terms of forms a responsive design for mobile. So will look at that as well.

Again thanks for your time, it's strange the second site was blank. I opened just to check and is loading fine.

Finally able to reply.

I'm not sure why I was unable to go to the second link, but I'm still unable. All that shows up is a blank white screen and the title is the URL instead of a site-specific title. I'd think if it was location, it'd tell me "it's not available in your country" or something... and I'd think it'd also prevent me from visiting the first unless they're set up differently.

As for the 'not sure what's going on' bit, consider adding a header over the paragraphs that explain more or less why the visitor's on the site. After your response, I went to see if I'd missed anything and realized the "you are here because" gets blown away by the big links right next to it.

I haven't looked at the site since my response, so you may have changed this already... either way, good luck! :)
