Browser Hijack Alert - With a Positive Outcome!

Ah, the plans of mice and men! I had the best intentions to spend the better part of today doing some reconstruction work on my website. Rethinking whether certain pages would not be better off as posts; playing around with different Wordpress themes; reviewing past posts for grammatical errors. All of the fun stuff that we are all quite familiar with.

In the midst of all of this activity, as I am going back and forth between my site and Google, I notice that Google is acting very weird; it seems like my keyboard is getting hijacked. What I am typing is NOT what is appearing on the screen. Multiple tabs keep on opening up; it makes it virtually impossible to work or get anything done. I spent the better part of 2 to 3 hours troubleshooting the problem.

Downloading and running various anti-malware programs; un-installing and re-installing browsers.....aaaaaargh. The problem is like a whack a mole it keeps popping back up.

The final solution; the old tried and true last resort....MODEM RESET. That worked like a champ. I don't know what wicked genius came up with this nasty little bug, but if it gets in your system, I suggest you do what I did and ultimately you will have to do a modem rest.

Why someone who is smart enough to figure out how to write the code to do something as tricky as that, does not apply their brain power to make a legitimate buck is beyond my understanding......

Here is something interesting...I see 8 likes above and normally I would have received emails from WA notifying me of that, but I have not? Is the WA system having a hiccup this weekend?

I dont think so. You can change or check all your email preferences if you click "Account Settings" top right. And then scroll down the page.

Like Keith said, run malwarebytes and anti-virus scans and it wouldn't hurt to use CCleaner as well to clean the registry. ~Marion

Bob, I would also be doing some basic maintenance and scans such as malwarebytes and anti-virus just to make sure nothing nasty is hanging around!

Sheez! I'm so glad you got it worked out and thanks for the heads up. Best.

Wow, thanks for the heads up. Glad that is behind you, I know what those days are like :)

Bob, it's because they are Evil. We must fight evil any way we can. My way to fight evil is Mac OS.

Sorry you had to suffer through that ... but good to know! Thanks! M

I am so glad you posted this. I am aware that often just shutting down windows seems to clean up a lot of problems but was not aware of resetting the modem. Sorry about your loss of time and the frustration.
Harold

I hate when that happens, so frustrating. And such a waste of time

Thanks so much for the advise. Sorry you had to be the one to go through this in order to learn from this situation.
