Freedom in Business Adventure in Life

I’m on day 3 of the 30 day blogging challenge from the suitcase entrepreneur and thinking about the question she has asked us today - “What’s your definition of freedom in business and adventure in life?”

It is always good to write these kinds of things down because it concretises things for you. I like the word ‘concretise’ – I use it a lot – to make concrete, real, or particular; give tangible or definite form.

So ‘freedom in business’ for me means that I am able to chose where I work from. I am not afraid of hard work – in fact I enjoy it – I love the buzz of working and I love sharing my work with others but I like to do it in places and with people that inspire me. So work for me is writing in hotel rooms with spectacular views as the sun sets on the horizon. Research and Development is discussing ideas around the dinner table with people I admire. Doing accounts and business planning would be perfect in a quiet corner of coffee shop in Vienna. Brainstorming would be great in the cosy atmosphere of brunch in Copenhagen – what the Danish people call ‘Hyggelig’ – and pushing the envelope, training the mind and body to go further, would be perfect in Shanghai where ambition can be felt around every corner of the city. I would be doing Tai Chi every morning in the park and I would finish every evening looking out over the Huangpu River from the elegant roof top restaurants of the Bund

The thing is that business is adventure. What you do, should be what you want to do. I don’t define business, adventure and life separately – it is all the same to me. Yeah sometimes business is bad, sometimes life is a struggle, sometimes it doesn’t seem like much of an adventure – but in my experience things change so quickly – so you have to kind of live every moment as it happens and find one thing to move you forward to the next moment.

Hate to sound banal but isn’t that what all great philosophers and self help gurus say to you – Live each moment -

The key to it all I suppose is finding the means to be able to live life like it is an adventure every moment of the day. This is why the internet has become such a fantastic tool as a means of giving people freedom. Thousands of people are making businesses online and are making good money every day from all over the world. You need a lap top, internet connection and your imagination and the world is yours. You can do and be anything you want to be.
