PAGE 3 = Reasons You Should Not Use the Same Word for Both
PAGE 4 = Final Piece of Advice

In this tutorial, I would like to guide you through the WordPress tags and categories topic. Specifically, whether you can use the same word for both the tag and category on your website.

When I just started building my WordPress blog, I spent a great deal of time figuring out how to work correctly with categories and tags on WordPress, and I found some information that the new website builders might find useful.

Before I move on, on the next page I included the basic definitions for WordPress tag and WordPress category to enhance your understanding.

Thanks for posting this. I guess I am confused as to whether we need to mess with the tags at all? I have been putting hashtags on my tags. Is that wrong? Where do they actually get used if the search engine isn't looking at them?
Reply
Zarina Premium
Well, it's advisable not to touch tags BUT if you already have them don't start deleting them!!! Just don't put any more tags in the future. As for hashtags, they are used in social media for the interested people to find your post.

Hi Zarina, Thanks for clearing this up. I was wondering...does the words of my categories matter for SEO? For example, instead of giving a category a title like "Food", would it matter if I named it "Eatery" or "Dining" for example or wouldn't it make any difference?
Thanks,
Michelle

Zarina Premium
Hi Michelle, as far as I know categories aren't relevant to SEO, but that's just my opinion, take it with a grain of salt.

If it doesn't as I think, then it's probably wiser to keep it simple for your readers.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for sharing this. And, yes your tutorial has eased my mind. I did not know what a tag was at first but, now that you have explained the tags in great detail. I know exactly what you are talking about because I see them on some websites. I always wondered why they had them but, now I know, why.

I already forgot about this tutorial until someone PM'ed me about the duplicate content error which could be resulted by the same words for both tags and categories.

Seems like it was timely for some WA members!

I have been wondering on this also and it seems the consensus is that categories are more useful unless there really is a specific reason you want to tag you posts.
Reply
Zarina Premium
Honestly, recently I saw someone mentioning tags within WA and I got confused because I clearly read a while ago on WP forum or something that tags are not as important these days. I use categories only - and I made them visible in the sidebar.
Does this help?
Reply
Zarina Premium
Yeah definitely seems this way!
As far as I remember this piece of information was from some WP forum talk:
"It is believed that search engines don't pay much attention to tags anymore as tags have been greatly abused in order to drive traffic to sites with irrelevant content (not nice to deceive internet users, by the way)."
Reply
Zarina Premium
Yes, Steven, I did add on page 3 this information -
"It is believed that search engines don't pay much attention to tags anymore as tags have been greatly abused in order to drive traffic to sites with irrelevant content (not nice to deceive internet users, by the way)." I am pretty sure this info was from WP forum when I researched a while ago!

Question: If people want to search for content on your website - does the search on your website use tags or categories to find appropriate information? I am not talking about SEO but website useability?

Thanks

Richard

Hey Richard!
Excellent question.

Actually, I did a search on my website and here is my guess: first, the search shows the articles that have keyword in the main title, then, the articles with the keyword within the body, and then it uses categories to find the info.

That's purely my guess, though. Personally, I don't even use tags - rather categories (and they are on my sidebar too). So it's logical that the search on my website would use categories to find appropriate information :)

Thanks a lot for asking it - it made me think and explore the topic! Much appreciated :)

P.S. It is my pleasure to meet you and I am now following you!
Reply
Zarina Premium
Indeed, Suzette. Personally I think it would use categories (for what it's worth I don't even use tags anymore), so it's logical to assume that the search uses the categories. Plus, I use categories on my sidebar.
Reply
Zarina Premium
I agree with you Max! And it definitely helps to put categories on the sidebar, doesn't it?

Incidently - where's your picture taken - a lovely place?

Hey Richard,
I am happy that you found your answers! :)

Since you are developing a new site, you most likely will be using the banners - and recently I noticed that they don't open in a new window/tab, so you might want to know how to do this.

Here is an easy tutorial on how to do that: Personally, I prefer affiliate links and banners to open in a new tab, so thought I'd share in case you don't like it too :)

And the picture was taken in Geneva, Switzerland :) Three years ago I was a language student in France and my friends and I decided to take a trip to Geneva for one day. It was so beautiful! Strongly recommend you visiting it :)

Being a language student in so many places during the summer is actually what made me start thinking about other work opportunities - to make money online and be mobile!

My site is very much a niche on walking tracks in my city and I haven't yet started monetising in any way - just trying to get enough good content initially. Its coming together really well but probably another month and I should be up to the next step of getting adverts / products etc on the site.

I went through Geneva when I was 7 - a long time ago. Don't really remember much but would love to get back there. I'm from NZ - its a long way to travel to Europe but hopefully again soon.

Thanks for your help.

Richard

Sorry for taking so long to respond back! Too many projects online and offline!

That's a very good approach - content first and then in a month or so use the affiliate links and other advertisement options. I don't even have adsense yet. Solely rely on Amazon and a few affiliate links.

Definitely should visit Geneva again - I've been there for one day only but it was an amazing day! And a beautiful city too!

It is my absolute pleasure to be helpful, Richard!

P.S. Yesterday I finally contributed to WA with a new training. Been so busy it's not even funny! Last night I was working on a book and it hit me that I should create a quick tutorial about the writing technique I used: Apparently people like it and I hope you find it useful too!

Cheers,

hi Kasotty!
Very informative and well done! You explained very well the difference between categories and tags. I use both and I also see categories as broad subgroups that readers can search on your site. In one category you will then have related posts. Tags are more specific to the particular post. About its specific content.
