Begin With The End In Mind

This is one of Stephen Covey's foundational lessons and it has stayed with me for all of my working life. It is a basic requirement for productivity and perhaps, the most important change that you can make, if you are not yet doing it.

Write Down What You Have To Do

Simply put, that is it.

At the end of my day I do 2 things.

First, I review what I have accomplished for the day, crossing off what is complete and making notes about things that I did not get done, always noting why. Things that I did not complete get rescheduled, if necessary.

My notes are colour-coded.

Red for crossing off and important notes. Blue for items rescheduled, again, with appropriate notes. My tasks are written in black.

Having done this at the end of my day I find that subconsciously, my brain keeps working on what I have written. By the time I wake up, I either have additional confidence in my plans or I quickly make any adjustments that I need to.

Of course, having written down what I have to do, I have a good sense of how much time I will need in my day. I therefore go to sleep knowing what time I have to rise the next day.

A good night's rest is critical!

At the start of my day, I do a quick review of what I want to accomplish, make any adjustments necessary and, I am on my way!

Cassi, I put it in my phone for a reminder. I should make it into a screen saver.
Always thinking of you Cassi. first it was for friendship, and we encourage each other, now it is for filling in parts of me, so I can understand and begin to make a plan of implementation.
Thank you, Cassi, You have my heart and I so appreciate you!

Great Post Cassie! I agree with you it is so important to manage your time effectively. I do this all the time at home and at work. I have a what I call a school timetable. I set aside segments of the day to certain tasks.

I'm lucky I can take my computer to work with me and do an hours research during quiet times, using my bosses internet to answer my long list of emails or start typing up my blog in word. If I have five minutes I'm on my phone checking emails. After work, is for emails.

Thanks Cassie

After learning much today from Cassi, the relationship with time that we very much desire to have is Quality Time.

Of course that will take vision and planning for your future. Only you can do that for yourself, WA has the tools.
It will take treating Quality Time like what it is, an ephemeral jewel, like a drop of water on a leaf.

If you don't get it moving"she" will be gone! Time, you just got to make her sure that she's welcome.

Nicely put that even I can understand it. I'm reminded of working for bosses who tried to compress a lot of tasks into a small (bucket) amount of time. So the running joke was if you have a 100 hour task, then put 100 people on it and it will be done in one hour.Thank God we are our bosses.

Lou, that is the way of the business world!

It is refreshing and much more purposeful to be your own boss.
All the more reason for us to make the very best of it. 🙂

Thank you for your support.

Hi Cassi,
Thanks again for this training.
I am in a similar situation ,single father of two adult sons (22 and one18 to become in November) and combining my online business with a day job. So time management is something I really have to do. I am glad to see that I do the same as you ,writing things down I use daily notepapers.
In the beginning it was hard to see I could not get done all things, but as I grow into it, I also shifted mindset and was more happy to cross of things then worried about things not done.
As you said we all have the same 24 hours, as long I know the things that should be done (priorities) are done ,the rest I reschedule. It works for me, actually getting more things done ,when I started making my daily notepapers of what to do.

Well wishes,
Luc

Luc, it is so good to know that we share a similar construct.
I have someone to reach out to who will understand the road I am travelling on. 🙂

You are very correct about what may seem to be a simple strategy of writing things down.
That brain-body connection makes a BIG difference.

Thank you very much for doing the tutorial and for sharing.
Do have an enjoyable Sunday.
