The Browser - the new face of modern applications
One very important feature of the Browser today is that it is also being used as the frontend for applications and managing databases, remote connections, rather than having to install dedicated software for a specific Operating system (OS). -This means that we can work from any operating system we like because we are working through our Browser as an interface.
E.g. -
A few years ago, the above Microsoft Office Suite had to be installed from a CD/DVD; now it can be run in the Cloud via a Browser. The same goes for many Antivirus programs and other software. The Chromebook uses the model of working through the Chrome Browser alone as a gateway to their proprietary Apps, such as Google Docs, Google Calendar, Google Drive and Gmail.
Another advantage of this is that we can use any Operating system such as Mac OS X or Linux. We are no longer restricted by whether a program was made (ported) for Windows, OS X or Linux.
King of the Apps - How the Browser has become kingBrowsers of today have to be optimized for a secure and fast experience online and some are a little better than others. So which one(s) do we chose, you may be asking? My answer is this…It depends on what we know or don’t know about the importance of security. Ultimately, you are your own best security as well. You also have a major part to play.
Let’s look at a few here from the vast pool of popular Browsers available today.
Of course, we all have our different reasons for using a particular Browser, even if it is because everyone else is using it or just settling for the default one that came with our system. Whatever we use, we must be aware of the latest security trends, updates and fixes and make adjustments accordingly. However, I am pleased to say that most Browsers are quite secure and differ only by the time-factor in the race to fix holes.
