2. Set up Signposts at Each Junction

Someone who is traveling will feel lost if he doesn’t have an idea of his current location. This also applies to writing, if your reader doesn’t know where they are in your content, they will feel lost. They would like to know where they are in the content and the next thing.

The first thing to note is that a reader will like to know what a page is about once they arrive on the page.

  • When your reader visits your landing page, they would like to know what the page is about immediately. For example, 4 steps to writing clear content
  • When a web visitor visits a product page, they would like to know what the product has to offer them immediately. Make sure you provide them with a clear image of the product and you use a headline that describes the product
  • When a web visitor visits your blog post, they would like to know what that current post discusses. Write out headlines that are catchy and promise them what they will learn. For example: How to make your words irresistible to people. The second thing to note is always put a marker at each junction in your content
  • Always talk about how your readers will benefit from your product; this will remind them of why they want to buy from you
  • If you are writing a blog post, your post should be able to give your readers a reason to continue reading. For example, at the beginning of this post, I stated that having clear content can lead to more sales and engaged users. This same message was repeated in the content in another way throughout the post
  • Once your content lacks a signpost, your readers might lose interest in the content. When you include good signposts in your content, this will keep your readers engaged.

Hi Israel, good points on your training about writing for clarity. For some who have trouble with writing can benefit from using a software tool. Grammarly or Hemingway Editor. I love Hemingway Editor. That software helps to make my sentences shorter and tightly wrapped. Both softwares gives me the best writing for clarity.

I appreciate the pointers you mentioned in this training. I would digress on the use of metaphors. Metaphors can also be misunderstood especially if readers have limited use of the English language.

I write in simple terms to help the reader understand the basic concepts. The use of infographics or videos for people like me who are Deaf and rely on the use of visual images to help understand. Like you stated, write in a pictorial format.

Great training!

Thank you. It was nice to see this in writing. A lot of those things I have done for a long time, but did them because I don't like reading something that is hard to follow.

It seems like mobile device users make it hard on content writers because of screen size, speed and impatience. Therefore implementing your ideas is great.

Spectacular training Israel. Always write looking for simple words so that people understand the message better.
Many times in my case I ended up abandoning many readings because the truth is I do not understand the message.

Thanks for finding this tutorial useful, Claudio! Much appreciated! Yes, most readers aren't that patient to spend time trying to get your content clear to them. Once it sounds so boring to them, they click away without hesitating.
