No matter what you watch whether it be television shows or movies, transitions are used all the time to move from one scene to another. If you remember ever seeing a movie scene ending and it fades to black, that's a transition. Likewise, when a scene opens up from black that's a transition.

There are many transition styles available in ScreenFlow to use on your video clips. The good news is, you can also use some of them on your audio clips to "fade" a clip in or out.

This lesson is all about finding, choosing, adding and editing transitions. Transitions help make your movies run smoothly and professionally.

PLEASE NOTE! The "over use" of transitions can be very off putting to an audience, so discretion is required when choosing the type you use and how often you use transitions.

Below is a picture of the "Transition Inspector" showing the types of transitions available.

Don't over use transitions!

The most commonly used transitions used by big hollywood studios is "Dip To Black" which fades a scene in or out and "Cross Dissolve" which fades one scene into another. The biggest mistake people make when they're new to making movies, is they become so excited about what they're doing they tend to throw a lot of different styles of transitions into their movies.

You can obviously choose whatever transition you like according to your taste, personality and movie style. Just be aware of what I mentioned above though and don't over use transitions and be careful which style you choose because some can be REALLY CHEESY and actually reduce the impact of your movie and message.

If you have any questions at all about this lesson or any others in this course, please ask me below and I'll be happy to help you.

Kind regards,

Phil.
