Have you ever tried to move an existing Wordpress website to a new domain name?

Believe me, it's a quite common scenario ...

  • newcomers who will want to move their existing Wordpress website(s) to WA ... often using a different domain name
  • many website owners will want to expand their original niche segment and usually that means a new domain name
  • many beginners will want to change their "original" domain name realizing that their first choice wasn't the best option
  • and so on ...

Now here's the thing ...

When you move your Wordpress website to a new domain name, you'll have to update your URLs ... It's pretty obvious, right?

The problem? We are not talking about simply updating the Wordpress address and site URL under Settings => General. That's just the very first step ... You'll have to update ALL the URLs you previously added to your Wordpress site ... I mean every single post and page, every single image or media URL, every single internal link, and so on ...

Which could (would) be a VERY time consuming and annoying process ...

Luckily, there is an easier way to do that ...

So I've decided to create this short tutorial where I will show you how easy is to quicly update your URLs after moving your Wordpress website to a new domain name.

Interested?

Let's do this!

Hi Zed,
This training comes at the right time. I was thinking is this will work in my situation.

I have two sites (say A and B) almost in the same niche and I thought of moving some of the articles from A site to B site as I think the posts are more relevant to the second site.

My questions:
1) Would the above works using the plugin?

2) Since the article has been indexed on the first site, when I move it to the second site, would it effect the indexed status?

3) If someone clicks on the old url of the article somewhere on the internet (Google search, social media sharing etc), would the plugin redirect the person to the new url.

Thanks for the great tutorial and thank you in advance for the answers.

Hi Joe,

So ...

1. The plugin doesn't have a "selective" targeting option that will allow you to target specific posts (those moved). But I assume that it should work in a similar manner ... If the URLs are correct (the old posts on site B) they won't be affected, and the "incorrect" URLs (those moved from site A) will be adjusted ... However you should make a full backup on both sites :)

2. Yes. A different domain name is a different entity and that means different rankings. The "new" posts on site B needs to indexed again ...

3. No. The plugin will update your links site-wide on site B, but your already shared URLs (that are connected to site A) that are stored on external third-party servers (social platforms, etc) won't (can't) be affected ...
