This training carries on from my previous training Setting Up A Free Mailing List so if you want to know how to do that, please read that first.

You should also read this if you want to know how to upload something to your site that other people will be then able to download, such as a pdf, word doc, zip file or other.

First, you will want to have the actual file on your computer. For the sake of this tutorial I will use my CV.

Let's go to our website, and choose a page where the download will be available. In this situation, it will be a "Success" Page, after somebody has successfully signed up for my e-mail list.

After I created the page and put in some text, it looks like this:

Ok, so that is a very basic page, and a "real" page would want to be fleshed out more, but for the time being it will suffice. So, how do we make it so that the "here" becomes a downloadable file?

a second question that is slightly off topic. If you save an article that was previously published as a pdf and offer it this way, is this considered duplicate content?

probably not, but im not 100% sure on that. I imagine no, because Google wouldn't read the content

The title of the pdf would be crawled but I imagine Google would have to download and read the pdf contents manually to determine what it was about, something I doubt the bots would do

Is this how it works with email autoresponders? The email points to the webpage which downloads the file?

I think you can include the file in your email if you want but for a free version such as this, you better do it this way.

Thanks for the training. I will have to check it out and see what to do now. I don't understand though how to have someone download a pdf that I would offer though. Do I put that in a media page? I might be mixed up. Thanks again.

Well let's say you want to offer a pdf to someone. You could create a new page called "FREE PDF" (or whatever you want) and on that page you would put whatever usual content you like, such as information about the pdf, pictures, screenshots, etc, then you would just go to "add media" as explained in the training, and add it into your page, just like if you were adding a photo. When someone clicks the pdf, it will automatically download.
