Comment spam becomes more and more prevalent as your website content gets indexed in Google, Bing and Yahoo. There are automated robots that will submit comment spam to your website in attempt to get back links and also get exposure to their websites.

Akismet is a plugin that will block most of this spam from coming into your comment inbox in the first place. In this video I am going to show you how to:

  • Activate the Akismet Plugin
  • Create your Akismet.com account (in order to get API key)
  • Set-up the Akismet Plugin and Activate Your Key
  • Utilize the different plugin settings

If you have any questions about the set-up process of the Akismet plugin or how it functions, leave a comment below and I will give you a hand.

Note: Akismet is not perfect, comment spam will still sneak through. It however does a pretty good job and it is recommended that you set it up.

Hi Kyle,
Kudos to you for the great tips on this walkthrough video.
I just want to add that in case anyone can't locate Akismet when you click on plugin on your website, don't panic. All you need to do is, type Akismet on the search bar and it will come up. Click on activate in order to activate it and you're good to go. Perhaps it depends on the Themes on websites, acts as the determining factor whether to find Akismet already installed or not. I think this training video needs to be updated since Akismet is no longer needed in WA.:)

Hi, Just to make sure if the Akismet was installed properly. I didn't go all through out the process from the video but this was in my plugin "WP REST API - OAuth 1.0a Server" . There was message also that saying; Files in the /wp-content/mu-plugins directory are executed automatically. Am I good? Thanks

Akismet is no longer required within WA hosting!
The siteProtect feature that has been added to WA takes care of all of the functions that Akismet provides.

Please read these two posts and comment on this post so that it becomes the featured post in this thread.

By reading the comments below it looks like it takes months to get the basic training updated. I wonder how much of the basic courses are outdated now. I'm glad I decided to click on the link to discuss the video. I too found it redundant but am following the instructions like a sheep. I have very limited time for WA and it feels I wasted precious time with the Akismet plugin.

I seem to remember that someone mentioned somewhere before that Akismet wasn't needed since WP-Spamshield did the same... this doesn't say much about my brain cells, ha!

I can tell you Akismet is still free if you choose the basic install. The basic install says it's for personal blogs and they ask for a donation, but you can move the money slider to donate $0. It did pop a box to enter name and credit card but I closed and continued, added my site and all was well BUT since WA is no longer supporting Akismet (almost for a year), now to the task of deleting it... sigh!

Good evening:

We have a question.
Currently, we have 5 Plugins on our site.
Two of those five are to deter spamming...

1) SI Captcha Anti Spam
2) WP-Spamshield.

Now, the lesson at hand is asking us to install a third, 'Akismet'.

In our 'Site Health analytics it is said that we should have less than 5 or, respond time will be slowed.
We were in the process of determining which Plugin we need the least.when we came upon this lesson directlng us to install Akismet.

This seems quite redundant.
Do we REALLY need THREE anti spam plugins?
if so, why?
If not, can we work with one of the two which were already part of the initial installation of our theme?

Thank you in advance for you help and advice...

Tonia & Dave

No, you don’t need all. You’re good with just WP-Spamshield. Delete SI Captcha Anti Spam. No need to install Akismet because it’s no longer free. The lesson hasn’t been updated. The link comment from Labman below will explain why regarding the Akismet.

Your Wordpress account is separate from anything that you do here at WA. The only reason you would ever create a Wordpress account is if you are either creating a gravatar.com account or an akismet account.

These are not the same as your login details here at WA or the login details for your website.

Fortunately for me, I have a neighbor who is a techy, so I will probably call on him tomorrow to see if he can help me out. If he has any suggestions that I can pass along, I will, though my system is different than yours, so it may not translate. Nonetheless, I was kind of glad to see I am not the only one dealing with this. I just installed the update to my Wordpress site, so I am wondering if that factors in to it. Have you also done the update, or not? I did the recommended backup before doing it, so I will have that to fall back on if anything goes wrong, but I'd sure like to just finish up this step and move on...

Best of luck to you,

If you remember when the first radar detector came on the market and everyone bought one for their car dashboard... very soon after the police were issued the new detector that cancelled a detector. So we have Akismet and I have used them for all of my blogs re the comment section. So too have the spammers learned how to disguise their URL numbers so that they can slid under Akismet. But it's rare and I have always used Akismet for all of my blogs. Why don't they learn how to advertise instead of all that time spent looking at blogs for an easy insert via comment? Because blog-spamming is free ;-)

Judging from the other comments below, I assume it made the transfer.

I am wondering that since I already installed Akismet when I did my siterubix website, if Akismet also transferred over to my new .com website (which now has a slightly different name).

Okay so I click on my affilaite link on this page and I get that link and I place it in a doc and it takes me to the above page - no problem - BUT when someone arrives there by clicking on the link will they be able to navigate around my site like I could!! - or do they only have access to the one page that is connected to the link.

Do we need a new akismit key for each website or can we use the one key multiple times?
Reply
Michelle04 Premium
You can use the same one for multiple websites.

Hi All, have just given myself a week off over Christmas to air out my brain, and it was almost hard to fire up my computer this morning. But this was a great lesson to get back into it. Practical and easy and as usual some of the comments here are great and just as informative.

Is this something I need to do or is it a spam?

Hello Web Admin, I noticed that your On-Page SEO is is missing a few factors, for one you do not use all three H tags in your post, also I notice that you are not using bold or italics properly in your SEO optimization. On-Page SEO means more now than ever since the new Google update: Panda. No longer are backlinks and simply pinging or sending out a RSS feed the key to getting Google PageRank or Alexa Rankings, You now NEED On-Page SEO. So what is good On-Page SEO?First your keyword must appear in the title. Then it must appear in the URL.You have to optimize your keyword and make sure that it has a nice keyword density of 3-5% in your article with relevant LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing). Then you should spread all H1,H2,H3 tags in your article.Your Keyword should appear in your first paragraph and in the last sentence of the page. You should have relevant usage of Bold and italics of your keyword. There should be one internal link to a page on your blog and you should have one image with an alt tag that has your keyword….wait there’s even more Now what if i told you there was a simple WordPress plugin that does all the On-Page SEO, and automatically for you? That’s right AUTOMATICALLY, just watch this 4minute video for more information at. Seo Plugin

Can you use the same key for your other websites?
Reply
Michelle04 Premium
Yes, you can use the same keyword. You will be competing against yourself. :) You'll want to be sure not to write the same articles in a similar manner, so there will be no chance of duplicate material. It would be interesting to see which one would rank higher. :) Michelle

Ok, I see what you were asking. My mistake. You can use the same API key for multiple websites.

Thank you, Kyle for the informative video!
I had set Akismet up earlier on my Site and it did indicate that it was activated, but I still thought something was not totally right yet.
Your video pointed out more clearly how to receive the key and enter it in the plugin area.
Thus, I discovered it is possible to overlook this because it will show, even without the "key" info entered that this plugin is activated.

Hi Kyle,
I followed your setup video and when i signed up to Akismet i was automatically signed up to a new wordpress.com account with a activation link in the email they sent to me.
As my websites here at WA use wordpress.org (i think) do i really need to activate the new wordpress.com account as i dont need it.

Sorry if its a bit confusing to explain i am a bit confused about the different wordpress platforms.

Does the API key work with multiple websites or do you have to get separate ones for each site?
Reply
MisterWailor Premium
You just use the same one for all of your websites.

I did all what you said Kyle, but at the last step, after I paste the API key and hit the button "Save Changes", I have a red result with written "We can’t connect to your site.
Your firewall may be blocking us. Please contact your host and refer to our guide about firewalls." As I use an Apple MacbookPro I don't think I have any firewall or a similar thing… Thanks for any help, have a wonderful day!

It is not your own computer. You might have to issue a support ticket.
Click on "Build my website" and support ticket is on the top right.

Just did the tutorial. My wordpress dashboard is probably an updated one. It did not look like the in the tutorial. Also, the settings were different and I did not see "use this key" box to click. Where I verified the settings, it indicates that the plugin was installed. Hope I did it right.

Yeah, this plugin interface was just updated. It now shows under API key. I will have update this when I get a chance to the new versions. :)

Akismet rookie here...just got this in a comment.
[…] Home Theater in a Box – Is there a best? […]
Is this spam? Is there a setting I need to change?
Reply
Rizzer Premium
Is a part of your site about "Home Theater in a Box" by any chance?

These comments get created sometimes by the interlinking between posts and can appear when you first make a post or update an existing one.

They are not spam just an internal thing that WordPress does but all the same are of no benefit and should be deleted.

Really hope that makes sense :)

I've been looking at my plug ins a lot lately. I know that each of sites we make have Akismet and CAPTCHA preinstalled. Is it really necessary to have a second spam plug in if we have Akismet?
Reply
tommydillard Premium
Yes you want to keep the bots out of your site that is why you should use captcha or a similar plugin
Reply
Kyle Premium
Like Tommy said, the CAPTCHA can serve as an extra layer of protection against spam. Many spam bots can actually by pass the front end of your site, but for those using auto submit scripts the captcha will block these.
