How Can You Get Bad Links?

A bad link can incur Google penalties on your site. You should be careful about the sites you link from. If a bad link is detected by Google on your site, your ranking could negatively get impacted.

If you obtain links from pages that link to spam sites, it can attract a penalty from Google. You should look up sites that Google considers spam.

If you acquire a link from a site that is unrelated to yours, especially if they have nothing in common, then it is a bad link. For example, if your site is a business site, then it would be wrong to take a link from a medical or cooking site.

If you also have dofollow and footer links that are not relevant to your site, you may get penalized. Always make sure that every link on your site has a reason or purpose for being there.

You should also watch out for websites with low Domain Authority. Domain Authority is an important web metric used by Google.

If you use a link from a site that has a low Domain Authority, your ranking will be negatively affected. Make sure that your links are from sites that have at least 30% Domain Authority.

Note that as you keep creating content, sites can naturally link to your web pages to read your content and, in the process, you could get links that are toxic and won't let you boost your Domain Authority. So, try finding out those links from Google Search Console (GSC) and disavow them to appease Google.
