A Gravatar is an "avatar" image that follows you from site to site when you do things like blog or comment on blogs.

Creating a gravatar associated with all of your Wordpress comments is very important as it adds credibility and humanizes not just the comments you post on your website, but the comments that you post on others' websites. This leads to a better, more interactive and trustworthy discussion.

To create a gravatar, it is a very easy process. You simply go to Gravatar.com and set-up an account.

==> Gravatar.com

**Do know that you can only have one gravatar per email address, so if you want multiple gravatar accounts you will need to use unique email addresses that are not registered within the gravatar.com platform.

In this video I am going to walk you through the following:

  • Creating a Gravatar.com account
  • Adding an image to your gravatar account
  • How to test your gravatar live
  • Associating a gravatar with a user in Wordpress.
  • Adding a gravatar to the SiteComments platform

Note, if you are wanted to add a brand new User to Wordpress, you can follow this training which will walk you through the process;

===> How to Create a New User in Wordpress

If you have any questions about how gravatars work, how to set them up or anything discussed in this video, please leave your comments below and I will be more than happy to help you out. :)

I am struggling to change my settings so that i can be verified =(

I keep getting "Failed to locate XML-RPC API
Something went wrong when trying to locate the XML-RPC API on your blog. Please log into your WordPress admin panel, then go to Settings > Writing > Remote Publishing and check the box next to 'Enable the WordPress, Movable Type, MetaWeblog and Blogger XML-RPC publishing protocols.'

Sure i am doing something very blond lol

They block xml-rpc here. It is commonly used by the Wordpress app on ios or android, and other third-party apps. (WA doesn't support the Wordpress app because they block xml-rpc, due to security concerns) Is this a blog hosted here at WA? You might need to contact Site Support.
There could be a plugin interfering with things.

I wish I had read this a few days ago before I tried to do it from one of my websites. From the time I finished the video to have it done on 2 email accounts was no more than 15 minutes.
Thank you @Kyle for the information. This training is just getting better and better.

I have set up a 2nd user within my website, as we are 2 people blogging now. Also, set up a 2nd Gravatar for this new user 2 hours ago, but the Gravatar just won't show up for this user? Any idea why that is? The email from the user matches the Gravatar email.

I have already written a comment then I need something else. Why didn't we do that before we were instructed to comment. This is more frustrating than it has to be. Wondering if this delay will cause me to lose my comment? Can I go into the gravatar and keep my comment or will it get lost like a few others have.

Hello, Dana888,
I had so many problems with leaving comments or reviews because my email address had my name. Opened a Gravatar account & nobody told me anything about my name being part of my email. My website suffered because of this. Finally, a newbie told me I am allowed to have 10 Gmail emails. I set-up a new Gmail without my name. Still, that wasn't enough I had to have a different picture. Which everything was set-up at Gravatar but they were having problems trying to update my photo. Now it's 4;30 in the morning all I accomplished today was a new Gmail email.
I keep telling myself to stay positive. My brain gets wacky when I don't have enough sleep.

Good Luck,

Hello Kyle,

I need comments & feedback for my website, which I can't get because I have been waiting for gravatar to give me a new email address without my name included?
I don't understand why people don't get credits for reading and leaving feedback for blogs?
Why do we have to wait because a website keeps making errors?

Thanks,

I have gone through Kyle’s training on how to add a brand new User to Wordpress,

Hey everyone!
RE: How to create a gravatar

I've done several comments and feedback on different sites but didn't get any credits on them.

I've also watched the video on how to create an avatar. A couple weeks ago I accidentally checked the box on gravatar (users>Your Profile>Profile Picture) and also clicked SAVE, which then gave me some funky face gravatar. Didn't understand then why I needed a gravatar. Now I know. :) But nothing is working here. Same thing is happening when I click on that to try and change it.

When I click to create a Gravatar account, (SiteComments>Settings>Create a Gravatar Profile) I'm taken to WordPress.com, which I don't want to go into. May I ask why? I have an old account on WordPress.com and it wants me to log in with the email address I used there. I don't understand how this can happen because I have never created a Gravatar account thru WP.com Is this where I'm supposed to go?

I have several email addresses, including the one I've used on WP.com but it won't allow me to use any of them to create a Gravatar Profile. Needless to say, of course, I'm confussed! :)

My email address here on WA is set up to be redirected to a personal email address which I also tried to create a Gravatar for. Didn't work either. Any suggestions? Didn't mean to write a book here. Sorry. :) Thanks
Lupe

You can have multiple Gravatars with multiple email addresses. One has to be primary to identify your main account.
The company that runs http://WordPress.com also runs Gravatar. So you are required to use http://WordPress.com to create a Gravatar, even if you don't have a http://WordPress.com website. Since you already have an old website on http://WordPress.com, that complicates things a bit for you.
You can attach new Gravatars to your old account, that would be the simplest thing to do. You associate your new Gravatar to WA, and can then get credit for SiteComments.
If you log out of your old http://WordPress.com account or perhaps do this in Incognito Mode or Private Browsing mode of your internet browser, you can create a new account with a new email, if you really don't want to use the old one.

Make sure you actually upload a picture for your Gravatar. I have heard that if you use a default image it won't work. It doesn't have to be your own face if you like being more anonymous. You can use a kitty or whatever you like to build as your persona.

Also, there is a rating on the picture. I guess this is for adult blogs, LOL. Make sure you rate your profile pic as "G". Some people rate PG, and they can't use SiteComments.

Edit: one other thing. I also have set up an email forward to personal email. When I tried to set up a Gravatar for the forwarding address, I never got a confirmation email. You can do one of two things here. You can do what I did, and temporarily switch your email to a non-forwarding address like your personal email, and then switch it back once you confirm (what I did) Or you can contact Site Support. Other people have reported that working for them.

The consistency of your image and identity across different sites, forums and groups increases your brand visibility and authenticity. you can achieve by creating account in Gravatar and set up your profile.
I would be happy if any one can comment on the design of my website. thank you.

I really can't see why I need a gravatar to be able to comment via Site Comments. If you look at websites, 'ordinary' people who come to look at them wouldn't have a gravatar. So to me a comment looks more genuine without a gravatar. As soon as you see a gravatar you can suspect that it's an 'artificial' comment.
Reply
Foobard Premium
It's how they track your comments. Feel free to comment without the Gravatar, but you just won't get credit for it. Not really a big deal.

Thanks for explaining so patiently.

I was frustrated at the time because the whole thing turned into a much longer job than anticipated. Nearly 16 minutes of video instruction on how to set up a gravatar plus thinking what kind of image to use, since I have websites in different niches...
Reply
Foobard Premium
Yes, It can be frustrating! Especially waiting for the verification email...

I think you have one Gravatar account, but then you can hook up different gravatars to it. I have one right now, but I just started a new site, and I'm about to hook up another one to my account.

Using email forwards makes running multiple personalities much easier. I used to have to check 5 different email accounts! Now it all goes to one, and I can send as any of the personalities from one email account. Much easier.

Thanks for creating this video. Made it super easy.

I did run into an issue with my domain email not working. This was quickly resolved as just used my yahoo email to create and log into my wordpress account.

From there I was able to add my domain email and make it the primary email for my gravatar. My guess is that since my domain email forwards everything to my yahoo email, its taking longer for some reason to get the confirmation email in yahoo. Not really sure though.

Hope this helps anyone who may run into the same problem I did.

I frankly don't know if I can do all of the things mentioned in this video. I am begging you, Kyle, to make things like "Gravitar" OPTIONAL for people like me who do not have a background in computer programming and computer engineering. I was all set to comment on a blog I read but I couldn't do it because of the requirement to have "Gravitar". I don't know why in hell "Gravitar is felt to be necessary. This should be optional only, for people who have way more knowledge of computers than I have. I hope I can do this. At the very least, I will now have to spend time during the next week trying to slog my way through all of these Gravitar mechanics, time that I thought I was going to spend in resuming my Affiliate Bootcamp training with Phase 2, Lesson 5. Now, I can't do that until I have figured out Gravitar--IF I can figure it out.
Reply
Foobard Premium
It IS optional. True, if you don’t do it, you’ll miss out on some stuff, but you don’t need a Gravatar to be successful.
You can always skip it and come back to it later, if you wish.

Just try it. What’s the worst that can happen?
If you run into troubles, post it here. To get the best help, post as much as you can about what you tried to do. No one working for free wants to ask a million questions to drag pertinent information from someone.
Good luck!

I don't have a background in computers and I was able to set up my gravatar in a matter of moments. Basically all you need is a Wordpress account which is free, all you do is sign up with an email address, it will ask for a donation but one is not required, once you get your confirmation email, you will be directed right back to Gravatar and then you will simply upload a picture of yourself and it's that easy. Really it is. I think it took about 5 minutes tops. Hope that helps.

Now i have used my email and i am thru. Can i change to the website email? Or i should go ahead and use the personal email address? will that work well?

I need to set this up as soon as possible to offer comments on many sites that are waiting for comments. please, help

Yes, you can change the email in your Gravatar. I had the same problem where the verification email from Gravatar never arrived until I fixed it by temporarily changing it to my personal email. I then switched it back to my site email forward once it was verified.

Hi, i used seth2@droneskyphotography.com to setup the gravater account. I must verify the accout before i can continue, right? How can i verify when my site is not full fledge one? Could i have used my usual email? I am stuck at this lesson. Could you come to my aid so i can move forward?
Reply

Yes, you need to verify the email you use for Gravatar. But you don't need your website fully set up to use an email on that domain. You don't mention if you set up an email forward or if you have WA hosting your email, but either would work.
Also, in my opinion, if you do get stuck on a lesson, you can often just skip it and keep going. if you don't get the gravatar set up, then you won't be able to use the Site Comments feature, but don't let that stop you. You can always come back to it later.

I'm not sure if you are referring to my comment directly below, but if that fix doesn't work for you, I've heard others contacted Site Support for help on this. I'm assuming the account you have gravatar emailing the confirmation to is a forward or webmail address for your domain here at WA? If so, WA Site Support might be able to help. I think they are filtering the emails. The trick of temporarily changing the gravatar email address to a gmail and then changing it back gets around the filtering.

What email are you sending it to? Domain email or free email service like Gmail?

if you're sending to domain email try deleting the email, then creating a forward instead, and forwarding to a Gmail account.

For anyone struggling with not receiving the confirmation email from gravatar, and it seems from searching that MANY people are not getting the email, this training worked for me: Basically, you just change the email address to another address temporarily, then you get a confirmation of change email to the temporary address, and then you change it to the address you desire to use. Then you get another email confirming the change again, and then once you confirm that, you can upload your picture and proceed.

I just went through the same thing.
On the admin page on my site, I added a nickname and then selected that from the "display name publicly" drop down box. Then I "refreshed" the page.
I changed my personal email address to the email address I used on my privacy policy page, and that helped.
Then I couldn't remember how to access that email! It isn't on the website; you have to access it from the Site Rubix page on WA. (it says Site Email on a bar across the top when you open it.)
Then I couldn't remember the password. (it's in the box labeled "password" and you have to click it, then copy it BEFORE you try to log yourself in, then paste it in the appropriate box once you get there. I wish you could just save your password to automatically appear after you put in your username.
It's finally done, and even though for me it was more like a scavenger hunt, it did refresh my memory about stuff we learned in previous lessons that I forgot.

Yes, it was complicated! There's a lot to learn, and I feel slowed down, too. But if these things will help my rankings and ultimately help me earn some money, I'm ok with it.

Gravatar accounts are free. Maybe redo the lesson to get the email forwarding correct.

You can also search here for training in the white search box. I use Gmail and had to do it a few times cause I missed a step or two the first time.

If not, throw your question to the community. There's bound to be someone who's gone through the same thing who uses Yahoo.

Ok. I went to sign up for my gravatar. I made up an email address but when I go to it I get a google webpage. It doesn't look at all like an email. Should I have just used the email I had already set up in WA and if so, how do I access it.

You cannot use a forwarding email to receive your confirmation email, and your email must be a valid email. Via your Wordpress profile, update your email address if it is not valid. Go back to your Gravatar profile and use a valid email. A page from http://gravatar.com will appear for you to activate the new email.

I hope this is complete as I used this only once. Let me know if this works. And I accessed Gravatar on my website via my SiteRubix hosting.

Do we have to pay for this? As when I tried to create one it said had already had one. I don't remember doing it. Then it takes me to a plug in that I have to pay for, which is $15.00AUD per month.
I do remember adding it because I though it was free but when it said I had to pay for that as well I didn't install it. And the costs keep rising.
So much for free website at $66.33AUD per month. Then I paid for a plug in that won't up load to the website it was a buy one get one free, the one I didn't need, uploaded and the other one didn't.
When I tried to contact them about it they gave me some rubbish which I already knew, tried contacting them again and got no reply this was Backup Buddy $60,00AUD. So not a happy camper at the moment. On top of all that when I try to ask a question it won't go through. So far only one question has gotten through and that was a private message to Kyle. and then we have to wait 24 hours to get a answer.

Hi Kyle; I opened a Gravatar account sometimes ago However, I did not write down the account so I cannot go into gravatar direct yesterday I click on gravatar and pop says if I have a word press account I can login to gravatar with it. I did. and was able to add a picture to my profile. But today when I log into my website the picture is no where to be found and I am stuck again without a picture in my website.
Is it OK for me to set up another gravatar account?

So, I've tried this and have the Gravatar accnt. Problem is, when it says it sent a confirmation email to my address, the email I used is a WA email for my site and it is automatically forwarded to my gmail accnt. BUT when I go to my gmail accnt nothing has been forwarded and I have no confirmation email. So when I'm trying to send comments now so I can get on with my training which I'm already behind in, it does not recognise my email as a wordpress email. Which is strange seeing as it's the one for my site. What am I doing wrong?

Hi, John!

How long has it been since the confirmation email was sent? There may be a delay.

You might try an email address that is no forwarded.

Well I tried it a couple of times then realised that I was supposed to have my website email send a link to my email in order to connect it for forwarding. So I did that and it said it had finally been set up to forward. Thing is, when I went back to send comments to other people's websites it still wouldn't accept my wordpress email. But isn't the email I set up with my website a wordpress email? Strange things haha. Can you tell I'm not tech savvy hahaha

Hi John,

That just happened to me too. The cause for me was that I had entered the email address incorrectly. I went back to the page where Gravatar tells you what to do if confirmation email didn't generate. Somewhere in the left column of that page I was able to access my account and see my email address and saw I had entered the wrong one. It let me correct the address, and sent the email change letter to the right email with the confirmation/activation link. Hope you figure out what happened.

Kyle, I have screwed something up here. I watched your video above twice and missed something. I do not understand why I just could not use dave@playlessforbooksonline,com, WA website, for my comments in this session without jumping through hopes. I have lost a day and a half trying to figure this out. Trying to fix things, I do not know if I have set up an additional WordPress account that I will be charged for.

Well, it has been almost 2 weeks now and I still can not get to Gravatar website to sign up. I type in www.gravatar.com and all it does is spin until it times out. The same thing happens when I put in en.gravatar.com. I have flushed DNS. I have deleted cache, I unplugged router, I even went as far to contact my ISP and they even gave me a brand new router. I don't know what else to try.

I am in H-E- double toothpicks trying to get one of these special emails associated with a Gravetar sp? so I can finally get going on this site commenting project. I've been at it for days now.

So confused. So confused. So very, very frustrated.

Aggghhh! I'm so turned around I don't know what to ask any more.

First wordpress asked me to sign up, and kept claiming they were sending me confirmation emails. They weren't. No way in heck. I've looked everywhere for 'em. Seriously! Who do I talk to at wordpress? I can't seem to find any help with them.

I had the same problem and frustraition

Go into site-Rubix manager
then look at the top you see site email
click on that

it will open the emails that you set up and if you didnt set one up yet go ahead and do so.

Then click on the email you would like to use (I set up a Me@mysite to only use as my gavatar email easy to remember)

then click on the sign in and copy your password

Proceed back to the gavatar site and input the information as per the training.

Hope this helps

My problems were much worse than that - really complicated. Gravatar is incredibly fussy about the email you use to sign up with them, and not in the least bit transparent about their secret rules.

1. It can't be an email that forwards to another email
2. Using an email associated with a wordpress account from the distant past (>5 years, causes weird problems)
3. Just removing the forward or deleting the old account will not clear the email problems initiated by circumstance 1 or 2

I was obliged to create a new email address that was entirely untainted by any previous problems in order to establish the Gravatar.

This is not my only headache with Wordpress. When it works it's idiot simple, but when it doesn't it takes hours or even days to find the solution and apply it.

I am very grateful to be at WA and have friendly folks like you to network and compare notes with. I can't imagine facing this alone!

Thanks for reaching out with a solution - it WILL help someone!

All the best,

Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth.

I had the same problem, so I had to create a new email address and go through the process of opening a Gravatar account to that email address after I'd done all of this to an address with a forward.

Guess this discussion board proves we are not alone in our struggles, which does help!

Hopefully you are now making further progress and your headaches with Wordpress are less.

Hi Monika,

Gravatar will only work to an email address which isn't a forwarded email address. I had issues until this was pointed out to me, I then set up an email address within the SiteRubix purely for this (you could use admin@ or info@ as examples) which then worked.

Hope this helps.

Hi John,

The same thing happened to me, too. I have a site forwarding email to my personal email and I kept trying for days to have the Gravatar site resend me a notification because I would never get one.
I finally figured out that Gravatar hates forwarded emails so I resigned up under my main email account and I got a notification right away. It sucks because I wanted my website email to show up, but in the end I was getting super frustrated that it wasn't working. It was more trouble than it was worth.
Try using your yahoo mail or even better a gmail account. I used my gmail and it worked like a charm.

Hope that helps!

Strangely enough, I am no longer being asked to log in with Gravatar when I want to make a comment on someone's site. The image that I use for WA is automatically loaded beside the comment box, so unless that has somehow become my Gravatar picture without me actively choosing it, then i guess I don't need to use it anymore.

I'm having the same problem as Craig. I signed up for a Gravitar account and submitted my email, but 24 hours later, no email confirmation from them.I asked for them to resend a confirmation email. I verified that my email account works and that the email from Gravitar didn't fall into spam. Don't know where to go from here. Apparently I can't do the pay-it forward comments if I don't have a Gravitar so I am stuck on lesson 6 of course 2. Any suggestions?

AshleyFisher, someone from Gravatar replied to me and manually activated my account after I confirmed my email (simply by replying to him).

Unfortunately, my issue now is that Gravatar won't recognise my password (which I wrote down and know for a fact that I am entering the correct one, unless there was a typo at the time of creation). I tried multiple times and couldn't get in. I clicked on the "Lost your password" link, figuring it would be easiest to make a new password aaaaand... the email with the link to do so isn't reaching me.

Something is seriously borked. I think I may just give up on Gravatar and not bother making or asking for comments.

Hi Craig,

What a pain! I'm even feeling your pain! I've asked them to resend the email on multiple occasions, but to no avail. I really don't want to use a Gravatar now, either, but the problem is, how to you participate in the "give and take" for comments? Before you can leave a comment on the platform, it asks for a gravatar. That's how this whole thing got started for me, and I'm sure for most everyone else.

Have you found a workaround so that you can do the sitecomment part of this lesson?

Thanks,
Ashley

Hey Crag,

I found something new. Go to this link and the steps should help you get an account. I did what this person suggested (they are on the wealthy affiliate site) and it worked! Hope it works for you. I had to use my gmail account and not my website email that forwards to my gmail. For some reason, the gravatar site doesn't like fowarding emails. Once I used my gmail account, I got the confirmation right away.

Good luck!

They were actually able to activate it manually for me (after a few attempts) and they suggested I avoid the forward as well. Glad we both got it working!

So I am signing up for Gravitar and waiting for an email to confirm my account. I first tried yesterday at about 2 PM and 20 hours later I have not received it. I have:
1) Clicked 'resend' multiple times
2) Ensured that I provided the correct email address
3) Tested the email address to ensure that it is active
4) Checked my spam folder multiple times.

I simply seem unable to receive the email for some reason.

As a follow-up:

Gravatar support got back to me and said they re-sent the email, but I still have nothing. I couldn't even reply to the email because I couldn't log in. I tried to reset my password, but it said there was an error with the email address I provided, so I tried to make a new Gravatar, but it said that the email is already registered...

So, end result: I will not be using Gravatar and thus cannot make or request comments. Very, very frustrating.

Hi. Sorry to be so slow in responding. Yes, it is a Gmail account. I have done things exactly as shown in the video, but for some reason the activation email can't reach me. The forwarding from my site is working (checked 3 times), but even with them sending it directly to me from their support guys, I don't get the email.

I have asked the m to delete everything associated with my email and my attempts to make an account. I will start fresh, perhaps even filming it to post for others to check out and see what's wrong.

I'm not too worried. If it doesn't work with the next attempt, I just won't bother trying to use it.

Hi. Are you checking the web email you created via WA? Not your messages tab, but the webmail for your chosen email? If you go to Rubix and then Site Email (where you were to create your email the first time) you should see a link to your webmail. This is where you check for any emails. Your password should be there as well. Let me know if this helps you cause it was a bit confusing for me as well.

No Lauren you will not need to create another account, to set this up. What you do need to do though is make sure you register your email address within Gravatar Word Press site.

After you do that, you will just need to verify your email address that your associating your new Gravatar Image with.

I setup my account with Gravatar and it said that it sent me an email with a link so I could confirm my account. Well, the email did not come. Yes, I checked the spam box. So I went back and asked it to send it again - no email. I tried that four times and I do not get an email. I went through the support on wordpress and it always took me back to the same place.

I used the email address that I setup for my website which is connected to a gmail that I already had setup. I followed the instructions in the lesson from Kyle. I have sent several emails using the website email address from other emails and had friends send me an email using the same email address I used in the Gravatar setup and I receive the emails every time.

I went back to Gravatar and checked the email address I typed in and it is correct. I do not get it. I tried to private email Kyle, but I never did get an answer.

Any idea's? While I am waiting for answers, I am going to try to setup the Gravatar account again.

Thank you,
